Championship membership sack supervisor as he units rotten report and admits ‘I do not really feel nice’

Norwich City announced the departure of manager Liam Manning following a 2-1 loss to Leicester City in the Championship on Saturday that set a brutal new record.

The defeat leaves the Canaries languishing in 23rd place with a mere nine points. Mathias Kvistgaarden gave Norwich the lead in the 62nd minute, but Bobby De Cordova-Reid and Jordan James turned the tide. This marks Norwich’s seventh consecutive home defeat at Carrow Road this season and eighth in league and cup after a miserable campaign so far.

It is the first time a team in the second tier of English football has ever lost their first seven home league games in a season. The club released a statement saying: “Norwich City can confirm that the club have parted company with head coach Liam Manning. Assistant head coach Chris Hogg and first-team coach analyst James Krause have also left the club.”

Sporting director Ben Knapper added: “We have tried absolutely everything possible to work through this incredibly challenging period but, unfortunately, given the recent run of results and performances, we have been left with no choice other than to make a change at this stage.”

Liam and his staff worked tirelessly to move our football club forward. They are all fundamentally good people and we wish them the very best in whatever comes next, reports the Mirror.

“We very much understand the frustration and criticism from our supporters at this stage. So far, results and performances on the pitch haven’t been good enough. We accept that responsibility, but it’s now imperative that we start to repair the relationship with our supporters and do everything we can to give them something to get behind.

“First-team coach Ryan Garry, supported by goalkeeper coach Tony Roberts and set piece coach Nick Stanley, will take charge of the first team on an interim basis, as the club works to appoint a new head coach.”

Following the match, Manning acknowledged uncertainty about his position after yet another loss. “I am sure there will be lots of noise and speculation,” he said.

“I need to go home and reflect on things, it’s too early after the game to say more than that, but I don’t feel great.

“It’s a tough one to take. I thought in the first half we were good without testing their keeper enough. We showed the right intent, caused them problems, but lacked quality at the key moments.

“We also started the second half well, got our goal and could have had another one. But it’s about sustaining the intensity and what happened after our goal was so frustrating.”

Manning’s departure follows supporter demonstrations outside Carrow Road against the club’s management. Chants of “we want Knapper out” were audible towards the conclusion of the Leicester defeat, whilst “sack the board” was aimed at the boardroom outside the directors’ entrance.

The 40-year-old was brought in on a four-year deal in June following fewer than two seasons at Bristol City. He succeeded Johannes Hoff Thorup, who departed with the club sitting in 14th position.

After 15 matches into the season, Norwich are currently languishing four points from safety, with only Sheffield Wednesday, who are on a dismal -4 points, faring worse. The Canaries will be hoping to have a new manager in place for their journey to Birmingham City on 22 November, following the international break.
