Major UK motorway utterly closed as horror crash causes large spillage
The M62 motorway is closed near Rochdale, Greater Manchester, this morning after a crash caused a spillage spanning every lane of the major transport route
The M62 is completely closed after a crash.
All traffic has been stopped on the westbound carriageway of the major route this morning (November 8), near Rochdale, National Highways said.
The crash is between junction 22 for Denshaw and junction 21 for Rochdale.
National Highways added that the crash involved one vehicle and has caused a spillage across all lanes of the motorway.
Posting on X, National Highways said: “Traffic is stopped on the M62 westbound between J22 (Denshaw) and J21 (Rochdale) due to a single vehicle collision.
“As a result of the collision there is a significant fuel spillage across 30 meters across all lanes of the carriageway.
“National Highways Traffic Officers are in attendance and recovery has just arrived on scene.
“A sander and sweeper are en route to scene to assist with clean up.”
Delays of more than 30 minutes have already been reported, but it is anticipated that queues could grow quickly.
A full diversion route has now also been issued for anyone trying to travel on the affected part of the M62. Road users travelling westbound are advised to follow the Solid Square diversion route.
- Leave M62 westbound at J22.
- At the end of M62 J22 westbound exit slip turn left onto A672 southbound.
- Continue on A672 until the junction with the A62 and turn right onto the A62/Huddersfield Road.
- Keep right to continue on Oldham Way/A62.
