Man, 56, is charged with homicide of ‘pleasant’ 62-year-old grandmother after police are known as to deal with disturbance

A 56-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a grandmother after police were called to a house disturbance.

West Yorkshire Police officers attended an address in the Woodhouse area of Leeds at 9pm on Thursday November 9, it has been confirmed.

Colleen Westerman, 62, was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Now detectives investigating her death have charged John Bootland with her murder.

Neighbours reacted with shock to Ms Westerman’s death, with one saying: ‘I miss her.

‘We just did the bingo. We were neighbourhood friends.

‘I haven’t gotten over the shock yet. In a cul-de-sac, you miss them as you get used to talking. She was right jolly – very friendly.’

Another told Leeds Live: ‘She always answered my wave with a smile. We don’t see each other as much here. But every time, she would wave back and say “Hi, love”.’ 

Tributes have also been left at the scene, paying respects to Ms Westerman. 

In a statement, West Yorkshire Police said: ‘Detectives investigating the murder of a woman in Leeds have charged a man.

‘Officers were called at 9.01pm on Thursday 6 November to reports of a disturbance at an address in Melville Gardens in the Woodhouse area of Leeds.

‘Sadly a 62-year-old woman called Colleen Westerman was pronounced dead at the scene.’

They added that 56-year-old John Bootland, ‘who self defines as white British’ had been charged with her murder and was due to appear before magistrates.
