One-man monkey crimewave as crazed beast leaves 14 individuals injured and kills cow
The terrifying ordeal in a Nepalese village saw a rouge primate attacking people ‘indiscriminately’ in their homes and leaving some struggling to pay for anti-rabies vaccinations
A tiny rural community in Nepal has been left gripped with fear after a bloodthirsty monkey went on a two-week rampage that left 14 people injured and one cow dead.
Residents of Keuleni village, Ward 6 of Binayi Tribeni Rural Municipality, say the crazed creature has been storming into their homes and attacking both humans and livestock “indiscriminately”.
Ward chairman Nurendra Shah said: “A monkey enters the settlement and attacks people as well as domesticated animals indiscriminately.” Locals now live in “abject terror”, fearing the rogue primate could be rabid.
Many victims have had to fork out huge sums for anti-rabies vaccines after being scratched and bitten by the beast.
Shah explained: “One has to pay up to Rs1,800 [£9.70] for a single dose, which has made it difficult for villagers with poor financial conditions to afford treatment.” Despite locals begging for help, Shah slammed park officials for failing to act, reports Kathmandu Post.
“Even though the locals had informed the Chitwan National Park about the growing monkey menace, the authorities ignored their complaints,” he said.
While local Anchal Joshi said it’s believed the mayhem is being caused by a single, unusually aggressive rhesus monkey.
“Since only one monkey with such aggressive behaviour has been seen, people fear it might be infected with rabies,” Joshi said. Their worst fears grew after a cow bitten by the same monkey last week died – fuelling panic across the terrified village.
Now, the people of Keuleni are begging wildlife authorities to step in before the killer monkey strikes again. In a separate incident last month, a truck loaded with 21 caged rhesus monkeys smashed into a ditch in Heidelberg in Mississippi, US.
Several on board escaped through a hole in the back door and there were initial fears that the animals were infected with diseases, including herpes and hepatitis C, and even Covid-19. Although five of the monkeys were quickly killed by authorities following the crash, three more were at large.
One of them was eventually shot and killed by a mum-of-three while it perched on the stoop of a home surrounded by overgrown shrubbery.
Jessica Ferguson, 35, said: “If it attacked somebody’s kid, and I could have stopped it, that would be a lot on me.”
A second was then shot and killed by a civilian who spotted it crossing a highway last week. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks also confirmed that the monkey was “recovered deceased” and that one more primate was still unaccounted for.
