Best ‘non conventional’ merchandise on Christmas dinner plate is known as – and it will break up opinion
The glorious Yorkshire Pudding has been named as the nation’s favourite ‘non-traditional’ Christmas accompaniment – but some Brits even like to include a salad with their big Christmas Day meal
The Yorkshire pudding is Britain’s top “non-traditional” Christmas dinner favourite.
A study found the humble batter pud, traditionally eaten with roast beef, divides dinner tables up and down the UK. Half of Brits back including it in their big day blowout, but the baked trimming is a no-no for millions of others.
Veggie alternatives to traditional meat are the next most controversial Crimbo platter inclusion. Over two fifths (41%) will turn their backs on turkey this year, found tinned pie firm Fray Bentos. A third of the 2,000 Brits surveyed will serve up full-size sausages, as opposed to tiny, bacon-wrapped pigs in blankets.
Nearly as many chow down on cauliflower cheese, while salad – a festive feast for 16% – rounds off the controversial Christmas dinner top five.
Other bizarre inclusions include pie, rice, fish, mac & cheese, and chips.
Larger-than-life social media star Big John Fisher weighed into the debate, backing Yorkshires and pie as December 25 essentials.
Known for his hilarious online food reviews, ‘the Boshfather’ bellowed: “I love a traditional turkey and roast beef with parsnips, cabbage, peas, accompanied by a tasty Yorkshire pudding on the side, with profiteroles, Christmas pudding and cheese and biscuits for afters.”
This year Fray Bentos has launched its own festive turkey pie in a tin for £2.99. Big John dished up a five out five review for the canned pastry.
He said: “A lot of people don’t like cooking or the time it takes, but you can whack this in the oven and it’s ready to eat in 30 minutes and very nice – bosh!”
The Scottish firm is also flogging a limited-edition ‘Sleigh Bentos” Christmas jumper for £25.
Its brand manager Jude Smart said: “Christmas is a time to come together, but when it comes to festive food, this dinner study shows the nation is anything but united.
“Pie is proving a surprise festive hit among Gen Z and Millennials, with over half planning to serve it up this Christmas.
“Our new festive turkey pie will tickle their tastebuds, offering a quick, tasty and hassle-free meal that won’t break the bank.”
