A person is fighting for their life in hospital after a racecar smashed into a crowd at a rally in a horror crash that saw eight other people injured.

Emergency services were called to Walcha Motorcycle Rally in Walcha, north of Sydney, about 6.15pm on Saturday. Police received reports that a vehicle competing in a race at a demolition derby crashed through a fence and hit a mobile grandstand.

Spectators were quick to rush to the help of seven men and two women, aged between 20 and 75, who were injured in the horror before paramedics arrived. They were rushed to Walcha District Hospital.

A 54-year-old man is reported to have suffered critical injuries with another three people being seriously injured. New South Wales MP for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan confirmed those injured had reached the hospital for treatment, reports MailOnline.

He said: “Thank you so much to the ambos, fire & rescue, the police, the SES, bystanders and everyone involved for their swift and incredibly professional work at the scene. “Like all of us, my thoughts are with everyone affected.”
