Man Utd information: Bruno Fernandes sends Ruben Amorim message as midfield overhaul deliberate
Manchester United are preparing for their Premier League clash against Everton after the international break, with a number of players set to return to the club
Manchester United are set to clash with Everton following the international break. Ruben Amorim’s squad hasn’t tasted defeat in a Premier League match since late September.
Initially, it seemed like Amorim’s tenure in Manchester might be short-lived this season, but an impressive turnaround now sees his team just six points shy of second place.
Several players are currently on international duty but will return later this week to prepare for the showdown with the Toffees. Bruno Fernandes has been shining for Portugal, who secured their spot in the 2026 World Cup on Sunday evening with a 9-1 drubbing of Armenia.
Daily Star Sport brings you all the latest news from Old Trafford, including potential changes to United’s midfield and a transfer target addressing rumours about a move to the red side of Manchester.
Bruno Fernandes makes a statement with hat-trick
During Portugal’s 9-1 rout, Fernandes netted three goals. Manager Roberto Martinez deployed Fernandes as an attacking midfielder in a trio, supported by two more defensive players behind him, reports the Mirror.
Under Amorim, he hasn’t been playing in such an advanced role, instead taking on more defensive duties as part of a midfield duo, alongside either Casemiro or Manuel Ugarte.
Fernandes has excelled in a more advanced role for his country, scoring two goals from the penalty spot and one from open play, as well as providing an assist. The 31-year-old has also performed well in a more attacking midfield position under previous United managers.
However, with players like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo occupying wide roles, Amorim’s formation doesn’t seem to accommodate such a position. Regardless, Fernandes’ performance sent a clear message.
Ruben Amorim is set for a midfield boost
United strengthened their attack over the summer with the signings of Mbeumo, Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko. Now, reports suggest that the club’s midfield will be the next area to undergo a revamp.
ESPN reports that the club is eyeing several midfield talents, including Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton, and Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller.
To fund these potential new signings, it’s reported that the club plans to offload some of its highest earners. Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford are among the names mentioned in the report.
Rashford, who is currently on loan at Barcelona, earns £325,000 per week at Old Trafford. Casemiro and Harry Maguire could also be on their way out unless they agree to significantly reduced wages.
Conor Gallagher addresses transfer rumours
Another player being touted as a potential midfield recruit is ex-Chelsea ace Conor Gallagher. The Englishman transferred to Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024 and, despite a promising start, he’s struggled for game time this season.
Back in September, there were whispers that United might make a last-minute loan bid for Gallagher before the transfer window shut. However, this never came to pass.
Now, Gallagher has spoken out about his limited playing time and the transfer speculation.
Speaking to AS, he said: “I’m not satisfied. I don’t think anyone would be if they don’t play as much as they would like but I will continue to work very hard to, whenever I have the opportunity, help the team and hopefully more opportunities will come to be a starter.”
