Man Utd star Luke Shaw instructed ‘he is not wanted’ after undeserved snub

Luke Shaw was left out of the England squad earlier this month, and Wes Brown believes the Manchester United defender may have to come to terms with not being needed at international level

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown reckons Luke Shaw might have to accept that England don’t need him ahead of the World Cup. Shaw entered this campaign determined to prove himself following another injury-plagued season at United.

The 30-year-old has successfully earned his place in Amorim’s plans and has featured in every Premier League match for the Red Devils this term. Apart from a disappointing display against Manchester City, Shaw has been outstanding for United this season, with many anticipating his inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad this month.

Yet the German boss snubbed Shaw, and his prospects of securing a World Cup spot next summer appear increasingly doubtful. Speaking to the Daily Star, BetWright betting ambassador Brown argued the defender merits a place in the current Three Lions setup but acknowledged the problem might stem from his club position.

He said: “When Luke Shaw is fully fit, I feel as if people don’t speak about him at all, because he literally does nothing wrong. I think he’s been really good in that left centre-back position under Ruben Amorim and, in my eyes, he should be in the England squad.

“The only issue is though, where is Thomas Tuchel going to play him? He’s not going to be at centre-back and he hasn’t been playing at left-back recently, so Luke’s unfortunately in a position where he isn’t really needed at the moment.

“It’s unfortunate because, based on performances, he probably deserves to be in it more now than when he was last in it. All Luke can do though is keep playing well.

“Will he get picked? I don’t know, because Tuchel might like what he has already.”

Shaw has delivered some of his finest displays whilst wearing an England shirt. He netted the Three Lions’ goal in their Euro 2020 final loss to Italy at Wembley Stadium.

Despite featuring in only 12 Premier League matches during the 2023/24 campaign, Shaw earned selection in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad.

Shaw has spoken previously about his love for representing his national team.

Prior to his selection for Euro 2020, Shaw said: “Of course, you always have hopes as an England player of going to big tournaments like that and you know, they did an amazing World Cup that year [2018]. I was happy to sit and watch it but it’s one of them where you want to be involved.

“Like you say, to enjoy [being with the England squad] it is the most important thing. I’m just going to go there, be myself, being back with the squad.

“It’s a massive honour to be back for your country and whether I play or not, to be back in the squad is unbelievable for me and I’m really happy that I’m able to be in the squad.”

Shaw’s next opportunity to secure a place in the England setup will arrive in March during the season’s final international window.
