Chelsea star Romeo Lavia showed his maturity when Manchester United came calling
Romeo Lavia showcased his remarkable mental strength when addressing Manchester United‘s pursuit of him.
The Chelsea midfielder had established himself as one of the Premier League’s most promising young stars during his stint with Southampton in the 2022/23 season. His brilliant performances on the south coast couldn’t prevent relegation but did secure him a £58million switch to Stamford Bridge in 2023.
The Belgium international notably turned down Liverpool’s advances that same summer, choosing instead to join the Blues. Arsenal and the Red Devils were also reportedly keen on snapping up the teenager during his Saints days, and he was quizzed about the attention from some of football’s biggest names at the time.
Despite his youth, Lavia displayed remarkable professionalism during what was his maiden senior campaign, acknowledging the fleeting nature of football speculation whilst staying laser-focused on his Southampton duties. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “I don’t read it because I just don’t think about it.
“I just enjoy my football and focus on what we have to do as a club. Whatever is outside, it is not what I can control, so I don’t pay attention to that. Football, with how it goes, it goes so fast. One moment you can be in the headlines and the next, you’re not.
“So the only thing to do is just be neutral, don’t think about it and get your head down and work.” Lavia’s move to west London was hailed as a massive signing, but more than two years later, he’s been a major disappointment.
Injuries have wrecked his time at Chelsea from the start. He’s managed just 30 appearances across all competitions since arriving at Stamford Bridge in August 2023.
He’s currently sidelined for a month with a muscle strain, and his persistent fitness problems allegedly prompted Chelsea to try offloading Lavia during the summer transfer window.
ESPN reports that whilst Alejandro Garnacho was brought in for £40m from United, the Blues supposedly tried to use Lavia as part of a swap deal for the Argentine. The Red Devils are said to have quickly knocked back the proposal due to worries about his injury record.
Sky Sports discounted Premier League and EFL package
Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the 2025/26 season, saving members £336 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games this season, an increase of up to 100 more.
Lavia has clocked up merely 240 minutes this campaign, and even when available, he faces a battle with Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo for places in Enzo Maresca’s midfield setup.
Following a sluggish beginning to Garnacho’s Chelsea stint, the 21-year-old has bagged three goals and assists in his previous three league outings. He’s been in the starting XI for the last five top-flight matches, with the west Londoners securing four victories during that spell.
