How to spend money on smaller corporations with a distinction: INVESTING SHOW

North Atlantic Smaller Companies is an investment trust with a difference.

It targets firms within an unusual region – the countries bordering the North Atlantic – although has shifted to mainly backing UK stocks.

But it’s the way it invests that really stands out, taking active stakes that deliver ownership in businesses and working to improve their performance and profits.

North Atlantic targets companies that have low levels of debt, quality management and a competitive advantage but are underperforming, or have an opportunity to step up a gear.

It takes a private equity style approach to ‘special situations’, taking a seat on company boards and driving strategies.

Manager Christopher Mills has been running the trust for 44 years and invests in listed and unlisted firms. He explains more to Simon Lambert on this episode of the Investing Show – and gives his verdict on the prospects for the UK economy, companies and smaller businesses.
