Full listing of 41 UK areas the place temperatures to plummet as little as -12C on ‘coldest evening of winter’

The Met Office has issued weather warnings for Friday as the coldest night of winter hits, with temperatures plummeting to -12C in Scotland and icy conditions expected across the UK

In the wake of wintry showers, the Met Office has issued additional weather warnings as the UK prepares for the “coldest night of this winter so far”.

Following snowfall across the nation, forecasters are cautioning against icy conditions due to sub-zero temperatures.

Disruptions are anticipated on Friday morning, November 21, as a combination of rain, sleet, wet snow, and small hail is expected to create wet surfaces in numerous areas. As temperatures plummet below freezing overnight, icy patches will develop and persist through Thursday night and into Friday morning, marking the final day of the cold snap.

The Met Office predicts that temperatures could drop to around minus 7C in parts of England and Wales on Friday. In light of the icy conditions, the Met Office advises taking necessary precautions to ensure personal and family safety.

Motorists and pedestrians are warned to exercise caution, as roads and pavements are likely to be slippery. It is recommended to prepare before leaving the house and allow extra time for journeys, whether on foot, bike, or by car.

In the North East, there remains a possibility of further snowfall, with wintry showers expected to continue moving inland from the North Sea. The forecaster predicts an additional 3cm of snow to hit areas including Newcastle Upon Tyne, reports the Mirror.

In Scotland, snow is expected to persist into the early hours of the morning, potentially settling or forming ice on untreated surfaces. The country could receive up to 5cm of snow in some areas, with the weather warning in place until 11am.

Temperatures in Scotland may drop as low as minus 12C. Weather expert Simon Partridge warned: “It does look like we will have the coldest night of this winter so far, widely areas are below freezing.”

He explained, “And the main reason for that is we’ve got a little ridge of high pressure moving across the UK overnight tonight and basically the main difference between that and previous nights is the winds are a lot lighter.”

He added, “Friday is really the end of the really cold weather as things turn back to average by the time we get into the weekend.”

This alert follows a series of disruptions across the country, with schools shutting down, roads closing, and power outages affecting many.
