Man United endure main damage scare as Matheus Cunha is pressured to overlook Christmas lights change on after coaching knock

Manchester United have been hit with an injury concern ahead of their Premier League clash with Everton, as Matheus Cunha was forced to miss a planned appearance to switch on Christmas lights after sustaining a knock.

Cunha had been due to help turn on Christmas lights in Altrincham on Saturday evening, alongside Sam Aston, winner of 2025’s Dancing on Ice and who stars as Chesney in Coronation Street.

Hours before the event, organisers Visit Altrincham stated that Cunha had been forced to pull out of the event.

‘Unfortunately Matheus Cunha has had an accident in training today and will not be able to attend tonight’s Christmas Lights Switch on in Altrincham due to medical reasons,’ a Visit Altrincham post read.

‘There’s lots of exciting performances to come including Luzahnn of Livin’ Joy and Sam Aston, winner of Dancing on Ice 2025, who is Chesney in Coronation Street will be switching on the lights.’

Cunha sustained a knock in training on Saturday. It is only a minor issue, but enough for him to stay at home in the evening and miss out on an evening in Altrincham.

Should Cunha be unavailable, it would mark a blow for manager Ruben Amorim as the Red Devils bid to extend their five-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Cunha had been expected to lead the line for Man United on Monday night, with Benjamin Sesko having been ruled out through injury.

Sesko hobbled off in the 2-2 draw at Tottenham with Amorim fearing that night that his £73.7million summer signing had suffered a serious problem to his knee

Amorim had played down the concerns on Friday, but confirmed Sesko is expected to miss the next few weeks.

Cunha has featured in all but one of Man United’s matches in the top flight this season, starting eight times.

The Brazilian attacker, who joined from Wolves in a £62.5m move in the summer, has become a key part of Amorim’s side.

Cunha has scored just one goal for Man United but has produced a series of impressive performances since moving to Old Trafford.

Centre back Harry Maguire is expected to miss the visit of Everton, but Kobbie Mainoo is in contention to return to the Red Devils’ squad.
