England 1-54 (Overs 12)
Ricky Ponting calls for Cam Green to come into the attack:
‘I think it’s time to have a look at Cameron Green here. This seems to me like it’s flattening out a little bit. What England did so well was run in and bowl fast and wicket hard. That’s what Green can do. Had a wicket early in his spell in the first innings of this game and it was the man that’s out there now, Ollie Pope that he trapped plumb in front.’
England 1-51 (Overs 11)
The wicket is starting to open up now, with visible cracks appearing. Batting last could be a big challenge for the Aussies
England 1-49 (Overs 10)
Very loose over from the Aussies, with a wild overthrow from substitute fielder Michael Neser. It appears that Lyon has left the field AGAIN, which would be a hammer blow for the Aussies if that hip injury is more serious than first thought
England 1-38 (Overs 9)
Starc still looking threatening, drawing a couple of false strokes, but England keep building their lead
Justin Langer’s case of mistaken identity
The Ashes must take Justin Langer back to his playing days a bit too much, with the former Aussie opener mistakenly calling Ollie Pope “Ian Bell” in commentary.
Justin Langer:
‘I would quite like to see Steve Smith bring a bat pad in here to Ian Bell – I meant Ollie Pope! They look similar, though. Because he’s always propping forward. And with that, he’s so confident. We saw that in the last over. He played that beautiful forward defence, and with this bounce here, swinging it in, I would like to see Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc employ a bat pad to him.’
England 1-37 (Overs 8)
Lyon misses one in the field and it is clear that hip is giving him some problems. It looks like he is getting prepared to bowl, though
Justin Langer:
‘He will be disappointed with that, Nathan Lyon, despite just coming back onto the field. You can see he looks in some pain with his left hip a couple of times when he was batting.’
England 1-29 (Overs 7)
Nathan Lyon has been treated off the field after copping a nasty knock while Australia was batting.
James Brayshaw:
‘Nathan Lyon spent some time off the ground. He’s back on. A tough time batting. Not a lot of protection there. Top of the hip bone.’
England 1-26 (Overs 6)
Duckett and Pope starting to look very settled here after the early disruption of Crawley getting out
England 1-21 (Overs 5)
Daily Mail’s Richard Gibson on Zak Crawley:
A pair for Zak Crawley has plunged his Test average as a top 3 player to 31.01 – comfortably the lowest of any player to have appeared in as many matches (58) as him. That places him a full 1.5 runs behind West Indies’ Kraigg Brathwaite, who is next-to-bottom on the list.
Stuart Broad:
‘Zak Crawley will play at Brisbane, he will continue to play in this team.’
England 1-18 (Overs 4)
Fortune favours the brave. Duckett takes on Boland, has no idea where he hit the ball, but it finds a gap anyway for a much-needed boundary
England 1-9 (Overs 3)
Despite the early loss of Crawley (again), Duckett is intent on taking Starc on. Bazball is alive and well.
Matt Hayden:
‘They scored at five an over in the first innings. They’re fighting fire with fire. It’s exciting.’
England 1-2 (Overs 2)
Much better from Boland this time around, getting an edge that didn’t carry and almost got Duckett chopping on. Bowling a much better length and offering a much greater threat than the first innings
