Arne Slot’s horrible resolution prices Liverpool as Reds’ disaster continues in opposition to PSV
Liverpool have fallen to yet another defeat and Arne Slot’s terrible decision over the summer has come back to cost the Reds once more
It was a ghost from Arne Slot’s past that returned to haunt him during his latest Liverpool nightmare.
Slot has faced PSV both as a player and a manager in the Netherlands, but once again he had no answers. On Wednesday evening, standing in the Liverpool technical area, he looked almost lost for words as the same old problems resurfaced.
Liverpool’s summer remains the root cause of their sudden, and dramatic, drop in form. The defending champions drifted through the transfer market, plucking players seemingly at random, with little coherence or long-term planning behind their decisions.
They extended the contracts of two clubs legends, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, even as both appear to be edging past their peak.
And the consequences are clear: the Premier League’s record signing sat idly on the bench as an ageing centre-back gives away penalties against a team that they should be putting four past.
Ivan Perisic, once of Tottenham Hotspur, got the party started for the Dutch side when he powered his penalty past Giorgi Mamardashvili.
The Kop had already been left with its head in its hands as Virgil van Dijk, under little pressure handled the ball. The Dutchman claimed he had been shoved – and continued his protests even after Perisic wheeled away in celebration.
Liverpool did get back into the game, thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai, and did start to work their way back on top – Van Dijk coming close as his header rattled the crossbar.
However, during the second half, the Reds just faded as PSV started to knock the ball around the pitch like they were the English champions playing at home.
And after Guus Til netted PSV’s second, Liverpool just stopped playing football. They were slow, sloppy and Slot didn’t have a single answer to try and stop the rot Liverpool find themselves in.
PSV’s third was typical of that. Ibrahima Konate, who has been scapegoated this season, missed the ball – allowing Couhaib Driouech to rush in behind and find the back of the net.
It’s West Ham next for Slot and his underperforming side, and, in not even December, it feels like a must win.
The tide is really starting to turn against the Dutchman, who once had Anfield chanting his name in delirium after lifting the Premier League title.
“Arne Slot is the only manager who I’ve seen who will see a 1/10 performance and start the same players the next game,” one fan moaned. A second said: “Slot is begging for that sack real bad at this point…”
And another added: “Slot legit destroyed my club, fans are leaving Anfield.”
