Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana’s Your Party reveals shortlist for official identify

Members of the new left-wing party will vote on options for its permanent name, which include its temporary name ‘Your Party’, at its inaugural conference in Liverpool

The new-left wing movement being set up by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana has shortlisted four names for the party.

Members will vote on the options, which include its temporary name “Your Party”, at its inaugural conference in Liverpool this weekend. The other three names on the table are, “Our Party”, “Popular Alliance”, and “For the Many”, The Mirror understands.

Thousands of proposals were submitted but some names were ruled out – such as the Left Party or the People’s Party – after talks with the Electoral Commission watchdog. Your Party was mocked for launching without a name but senior figures said they wanted supporters to decide.

The party, which has been dogged by toxic in-fighting since it launched in the summer, will also decide on a leadership model.

It comes after explosive spats at the top of the party, a row over donations and the departure of two of the independent MPs, Adnan Hussain and Iqbal Mohamed.

A spokesman for the party, which has around 50,000 members, said: “We’re doing politics differently: from the ground up, not top-down. This weekend, our members will do something historic: found a new kind of political party, one rooted in and accountable to communities, not vested interests.

“Our programme, structures, strategy and even name will all be decided by our members. There’s a democratic deficit in British politics – we’re turning the leaf.”

Former Labour leader Mr Corbyn said: “Over the last few months I’ve travelled the length and breadth of the country, speaking to people, and learning about their visions for a member-led party.

“I am very excited to get this party started — and begin the work of building a majority for real political change. This is our chance to create a mass, democratic, socialist party that can be a voice for economic justice and peace.”

Ms Sultana, who quit Labour to sit as an independent MP, added: “I’m looking forward to the Your Party founding conference, where we’ll work collectively toward our shared socialist vision. We’re building a new kind of party – rooted in and democratically accountable to a mass movement.”

The conference comes amid questions over whether the fledgling party can transcend infighting and power struggles to emerge as a force on the left. It also comes amid a rise in the polls from the Green Party under new leader Zack Polanski.
