A man has earned the tragic nickname “the world’s loneliest man” after his body was found in his flat, a few years after he had passed. The grim discovery, which left neighbours stunned, shocked an entire nation.

The tragic story of Branislav Tešanović, dubbed “the world’s loneliest man,” shocked Sweden when his body was discovered in his Stockholm flat, four years after he had died. The 78-year-old Serb, who had lived in Sweden for four decades, lay undiscovered for three years, eight months and eight days.

Even more disturbingly, Branislav’s radio was still playing and the lights were still on from the day he passed until he was discovered.

It was only after neighbours raised the alarm that police found his remains. Branislav was subsequently buried in 2020 with no family present, as social services couldn’t track down any relatives, Serbian news outlet Blic reported.

According to reports, Branislav succumbed when he fell to the floor in a corner of his flat and died face down. The incident likely occurred on March 10, 2016, the day after his birthday.

When police finally entered the flat nearly four years after his death, they found the calendar still turned to March 11, a mountain of unopened post littering the floor, and the radio eerily still playing. Branislav was quickly dubbed the “loneliest man” by the Swedish press, sparking documentaries and a flurry of articles asking: Who was Branislav Tešanović?

The media further pieced together fragments of his life. As a result, reports found that Branislav was an immigrant from ex-Yugoslavia who worked a string of manual jobs and loved outdoor chess.

Unfortunately, Branislav remained a mystery to many. Nevertheless, two years later, Dragan Laban, a fellow Serb living in Sweden, was so moved by Branislav’s heartbreaking fate that he decided to give him the send-off he deserved.

Dragan tracked down Branislav’s relatives and organised a second funeral, this time with family by his side. Dragan’s own life has fueled his sense of humanity.

He was born in 1973 in Montenegro and took before experiencing war and eventually rebuilding his life from scratch in Sweden.

After surviving on rotten fruit as a migrant worker in Greece, he eventually became a successful business owner and a central figure in the Serbian community of Södertälje.

Additionally, Dragan and his family have donated generously to humanitarian causes and supported those in need across Europe.
