Dad-of-two weightlifter, 55, killed in horrific barbell accident throughout gymnasium session
‘Much-loved’ community leader Ronald Montenegro died after the huge weight slipped out of his grasp and fell on him, sparking tributes to a man who championed his town’s traditions
A dad of two described as a “leader” and a “friend” was killed in a horrific gym accident while bench-pressing. Ronald Montenegro, 55, died when a heavy barbell slipped from his grasp and hit him in the chest during a weightlifting session.
Fitness fan Ronald, 55, was able to free himself from the heavy weight as gym staff and other users rushed to help him. Harrowing footage of the freak accident showed him get to his feet, before then collapsing to the ground again in agony. He was rushed to hospital, but medics were unable to save him.
Museum boss Ronald was much-loved by the community of Olinda in Brazil, where he was one of the men responsible for the town’s annual carnival.
He was president of the town’s Palacio dos Bonecos Gigantes museum, home to 15-foot tall paper mache and cloth puppets. Weighing as much as 45 kilos, the puppets are a traditional part of the town’s carnival every February, reports The Sun.
In a moving tribute, the museum said: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald Montenegro, our president and an indispensable figure in the history and construction of the Palacio dos Bonecos.
“Today we have lost not only a leader, but a friend, a creator, a passionate defender of popular culture, and one of the people most responsible for keeping alive the tradition of giant puppets that enchant Olinda and the world.”
The statement added: “His dedication, vision, and love for carnival have marked generations and will live on in every detail of our work.
“Out of respect for his memory and the mourning of his entire family and team, we inform you that the activities of the Palacio dos Bonecos will be suspended, returning to normal on December 5.
“We appreciate everyone’s understanding and ask that you join us in prayer and tribute to this great man who left an eternal legacy to the culture and tradition of the Olinda carnival.”
The tragic incident took place on Monday at RW Academia, Ronald’s regular gym in Olinda, near the city of Recife on Brazil’s north-east coast. Police opened an investigation into the tragic ordeal but have already concluded it was an accident.
A statement from RW Academia read: “It is with deep sadness and dismay that RW Academia expresses its solidarity with the passing of our student Ronald Jose Salvador.
“The entire team provided immediate assistance, promptly calling for specialised help. Despite all efforts, we received the news of his passing with immense sorrow.”
