Darts star suffers embarrassing wardrobe malfunction earlier than passionate gravy rant
Ricky Evans won his World Darts Championship opener on Friday night but the occasion featured an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction
Darts sensation Ricky Evans had the Alexandra Palace faithful in raptures on Friday with his World Darts Championship entrance and festive gear. But the English ace endured an awkward wardrobe malfunction following his commanding 3-0 first-round triumph.
The lightning-quick Evans has built a reputation for electrifying the Ally Pally audience and he delivered once again when taking on Man Lok Leung, making his entrance to Shakin’ Stevens’ ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’.
Evans sported a bespoke holiday-themed shirt and trousers complete with Christmas tree spectacles and a jolly hat, belting out the tune alongside the spectators as he strode towards the oche.
His flamboyant arrival was matched by an emphatic 3-0 victory. Yet proceedings took a humorous and mortifying twist once the match had finished.
After landing the match-winning dart, Evans approached the board to retrieve his arrows but one tumbled to the ground. As he crouched to collect the dart, his specially-made trousers ripped.
Official Huw Ware witnessed the incident firsthand, with Evans apparently asking the referee if his trousers had indeed split, both appearing taken aback as they glanced towards the cameras. During his subsequent interview with presenter Polly James, he couldn’t resist displaying the mishap to the audience.
Speaking at his post-match press conference, he remarked: “I will say, they didn’t fit last year and they did this year. Maybe November has hit me a bit hard!
“I’ve got trousers planned for other rounds so it doesn’t bother me. I’ve just shown it off to the world but if you’re a fan of darts, you’ve probably seen my bum before.”
However, his post-match conversation wasn’t solely focused on his wardrobe choices, as Evans launched into an unexpected tirade against Christmas, labelling the festive season as “rubbish.” He also took a swipe at gravy.
“Christmas is rubbish,” Evans declared while chatting with Sky Sports’ James. “It is. Hands up if you like gravy? Eh. Hands up if you like meat and gravy? Hands up if you think gravy is the devil!?”
The crowd didn’t take kindly to such provocative questions and this theme continued into Evans’ press conference where he stated: “I hate gravy. Everyone loves it don’t they? I just hate it. The smell and everything.
“Give me cranberry sauce or ketchup will do. That’s my opinion. My Christmas Day meal will be all the meat. The mash and the roast potatoes. Essentially all the meat and potatoes. I don’t mind the old veg. Just not gravy.”
