Brown Univeristy cancels all upcoming exams

Brown University Provost Francis J. Doyle III said all upcoming exams have been canceled in light of the shooting.

‘Given the deeply tragic events that took place on our campus yesterday, all remaining undergraduate, graduate and medical classes, exams, and papers or projects for the Fall 2025 semester will not take place as scheduled,’ Doyle said in a statement.

‘This choice was made out of our profound concern for all students, faculty and staff on our campus.

‘In the immediate aftermath of these devastating events, we recognize that learning and assessment are significantly hindered in the short term and that many students and others will wish to depart campus.

‘Students are free to leave if they are able. Students who remain will have access to on-campus services and support.’

‘We know there will be many academic concerns about the implications of not holding classes and exams as scheduled,’ Doyle added.

‘We will follow up with more information in the coming days.

Shooting comes after Rhode Island tightened gun control laws

The shooting came despite the state House of Representatives passing a law in May which banned assault weapons in Rhode Island in an effort to prevent mass tragedies.

The assault weapons ban prohibits the manufacture, purchase, sale, transfer and possession of certain assault weapons including certain types of semi-automatic shotguns, rifles and pistols, and would levy criminal penalties for anyone convicted of violating the ban.

Police said the Brown University shooter used a handgun, which can be classed as an assault weapon in some cases. The specifics of the gun used have not been given.

Suspect described as man in dark clothing

The suspect was a man in dark clothing who was last seen leaving the engineering building where the attack happened, said Timothy O’Hara, deputy chief of Providence police.

Security footage shown below caught the suspect walking away from the building, but his face was not visible. Some witnesses reported that the man, who could be in his 30s, may have been wearing a camouflage mask, O’Hara said.
