Tragic discovery in seek for lacking scholar one month after disappearance

Aryan Sharma, 20, was last seen on CCTV footage jogging down a road just after midnight, and on Thursday Police said they have found what they believe is his body

Police said they have found a body believed to be a missing student near a river almost one month after he was last seen. Police said in a statement on Thursday, December 18, that the body of missing Loughborough student Aryan Sharma had been found following a search of the River Soar in Normanton on Soar.

A body was seen in the river on the evening of Sunday, December 14 and officers from the Tactical Support Team and the National Police Air Service were deployed. “Although formal identification is yet to take place, it is believed to be Aryan,” Leicestershire Police said.

Sharma was last seen on CCTV footage in Meadow Lane, on the outskirts of Loughborough, at around 12.30am on Saturday, November 22 November. The footage showed the student jogging down the pavement.

The 20-year-old had left his accommodation at around 9.30pm and was walking towards Stanford-on-the-Soar before he disappeared.

Sharma’s family, who have asked for privacy, are receiving support from specialist officers.

Police said a file will be prepared for the Coroner.
