Shoppers shell shocked to see Easter eggs on sale simply days after Christmas

EGGSCLUSIVE: Shell-shocked shoppers have hit out at supermarkets for stocking chocolate bunnies and Easter eggs three months early, though some think it is a cracking idea

Shoppers were shell shocked to see chocolate bunnies and Easter eggs on sale in supermarkets – just 100 days early.

Major supermarket chains like Asda and Morrisons have already started stocking a selection of the chocolate favourites and rabbits on their shelves this week.

Cadbury’s Creme Eggs and mini eggs are among the items on the shelves, a mere three months before Easter Sunday, which falls on April 5 next year.

But they are thought to be behind discount retailer Poundland and frozen food specialist Iceland, who were said to have had them on display before Santa had even arrived.

And dozens of other high street stores now boast displays of Easter Eggs to the bemusement of Brits who have barely finished off their Christmas leftovers. Morrisons shopper Hatice Dogus fumed: “It’s a sad sign of the over commercialised world we live in.”

Mum-of-one Lauren Kirk-Whitaker said: “I saw them before Christmas actually in Iceland. I couldn’t believe it.”

But her hubby Thomas thought it was a cracking idea, saying: “I like a Creme Egg to be honest, so I do look forward to seeing them.”

Poundland in St Stephens Street, Norwich, had already started flogging Easter chocolates in a “two for £3 deal” as part of a shop floor display alongside the reindeer and Christmas crackers.

Shopper Simon Dade, 69, said: “It’s way too early, it’s like selling Christmas trees in spring. I don’t celebrate Easter and I know it’s important to some people, but I don’t understand why they have to be on shelves now.”

Sue Rose, 71, added: “I think it’s ridiculous and spoils it for children, especially because it makes it less special if they are available this soon. I mean, Christmas hasn’t even gone yet, and it ruins the magic.”

And photos of Easter displays sparked a backlash online, with one X user raging: “I detest this. Sick to death of commercialism ruining our celebrations with their overt promotions, which destroy any kind of sacredness attached to the events.”

Another fumed: “I thought I was having a ‘senior moment’ in a well-known local pound shop – it was displaying Easter Eggs! What had happened to Christmas? Had I awakened from a period of hibernation? No, it was indeed December 23.”

A spokesman for Poundland said: “Some stores have started to give a sneak peek into what’s coming in 2026, but they are also still stocked full of Christmas goodies too. To be honest, it’s never too early for a Creme Egg.”
