Hopeful replace as cricket legend Damien Martyn fights lethal illness in hospital

Cricket legend Adam Gilchrist has provided a positive health update on former teammate Damien Martyn.

The commentator has revealed there are ‘positive signs’ surrounding the health of his former teammate, in the midst of his battle with menangitis.

‘He’s still in hospital,’ Gilchrist told Fox Cricket.

‘There’ll be more details come out as they come to hand.

‘But certainly in the last 24 hours, some positive signs are the indications coming out of the various tests he’s having,

‘A fine player, terrific fella. I just hope he can continue a recovery.’

The former Aussie batter was rushed to a Brisbane hospital in a serious condition after falling ill on Boxing Day.

Martyn was put into the coma while suffering from meningitis.

The disease inflames the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord and can lead to swelling on the brain.

News of the diagnosis sent shockwaves through the cricket community. 

People from around the globe have sent thoughts and prayers to the man who played 67 Test matches for Australia. 

Martyn scored 4406 runs in Test cricket at an average of 46.4 with 13 centuries.

He also scored a further 5346 runs in ODIs.
