‘Bionic willy’ surgical procedure defined – and why so many blokes are getting it

The NHS is fitting more and more ‘bionic willies’ than ever before. Here’s why thousands of men are opting for a mechanical solution.

A record number of men are receiving ‘Bionic willies’ from the NHS. At around £8,328 you too could be the proud owner of a mechanical upgrade, courtesy of the NHS. But why are so many men getting them and what are they actually for?

Meet the Penile Prosthesis (the surgical name for the addition) a device which plays the last resort for those struggling with persistent erectile dysfunction and what the NHS provide should avenues like Viagra or injections not work.

The Penile Prosthesis is actually a miracle for those that struggle with erectile dysfunction. Continued erectile dysfunction can prove very painful for those who suffer as well as lead to mental health issues or even be a signal of underlying health issues, like Cardiovascular Disease- something often associated with the dilemma.

The popular solution is the bionic willy. This procedure consists of an hour long careful surgery whereby, the prosthesis is inserted with pump activation usually placed in the scrotum along with a balloon reservoir which comes with a fitted pump and release valve- although there are varying ways in which the procedure can be carried out.

Because of their wide success these mechanical additions are on the rise. An NHS report explains that in 2018/19, 26 NHS providers performed penile prosthesis surgery with 17 providers implanting less than 10 penile prostheses in the year and the surgery has proved popular worldwide. Healthcare providers across the globe carried out 63,000 penile prosthesis throughout the 2010’s and 2,359 were performed in the UK alone over the past five years.

The implants cost the NHS anything from £3,000-7,000 and with the rising cases these penile corrections are coming at quite the cost but the surgeries are clearly doing some good for all involved. There have also been a few handed out to men in their twenties and over 20 were given to men in their thirties in the last year, suggesting the surgeries and definitely not an aged matter as these cases often relate to physical or psychological conditions in the patients.

Professionals say this surgery offers life changing results and testimonials from across the globe all follow the same lines, expressing that all things from their confidence to their relationships and their sexual experiences were saved. Well over half of men stating that they experience impotence (58.2%) and more than a quarter experiencing erectile dysfunction during more than half of all their sexual encounters (27.3%), it’s no surprise that these surgeries are on the rise.

Data suggests that these men see an overwhelmingly improved quality of life and there appears to be little risk with complications, with over 80% saying they’re entirely happy with their results.
