Huge fireplace erupts at historic golf membership in Essex with clubhouse up in flames

A huge fire erupted this afternoon at a historic golf club in Essex, with the clubhouse up in flames. 

Firefighters raced to the 19th century West Essex Golf Club earlier today to tackle the blaze, with six fire crews and around 60 firefighters reportedly at the scene. 

The fire started at just before 3pm and crews have confirmed that there are no reported injuries so far. 

Essex County Fire & Rescue Service said all staff have been accounted for and are safe outside of the building. 

An Essex County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: ‘Firefighters were called to a fire at a golf club in Waltham Abbey this afternoon (Monday 5 January). 

‘When the first fire crews arrived they confirmed everyone was accounted for and no one was injured. They requested additional fire engines to support. 

‘The building, which measured approximately 25m x 15m, has two storeys. The fire is affecting the whole building.

‘Around 60 firefighters are at the scene, working hard to tackle the fire.

‘Essex firefighters are being supported by nearby fire crews from London Fire Brigade and Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service.
