Trump declares US strikes in Mexico on drug cartels amid surging WW3 fears

President Trump has said the US will begin land strikes against drug cartels in Mexico and declared his ‘own morality’ is the only thing that can stop him after the capture of Venezuela’s Maduro

Donald Trump has declared the US will initiate land strikes on drug cartels in Mexico, claiming his global power is only constrained by his “own morality”.

The president revealed plans for military action against cartels residing in Mexico just days after Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro was apprehended and taken to New York to be tried on accusations of narcoterrorism.

On Thursday evening Trump announced military action would be taken and told Fox News: “We are gonna start now hitting land with regard to the cartels. The cartels are running Mexico, it’s very sad to watch and see what’s happened to that country.” Earlier when questioned about the extent of what the US military could do in the region, the president bragged about his vast foreign policy powers.

The president told The New York Times: “My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

Trump has hinted Greenland, Cuba, and Colombia could be next in line for US operations, sparking outrage among NATO and world leaders, including UK’s Keir Starmer and France’s Emanuel Macron. During the interview, the president even paused to take a call from Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who vowed he would “take up arms” if Trump targeted him.

Since his election campaign, Trump and his allies have toyed with the idea of invading or attacking the cartels in Mexico. He has blamed Central American drug traffickers for the deaths of between 250,000 and 300,000 Americans annually, attributing it to the influence of the cartels and fentanyl trafficking.

“It’s horrible, its devastated families, you lose a child or a parent. We’ve done a really good job, we’re knocking it down,'” Trump informed Hannity. In the immediate aftermath of Maduro’s capture, Trump had previously cautioned Mexico to “get their act together.

“You have to do something with Mexico. We’re going to have to do something. We’d love Mexico to do it, they’re capable of doing it, but unfortunately, the cartels are very strong in Mexico.”

Since his election campaign, Trump and his associates have toyed with the idea of invading or attacking the cartels in Mexico. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed the concept of US military intervention in Mexico has been frequently brought up in her discussions with Trump, but she has consistently declined the offer.

Mexican President has said she views it as a non-starter and maintains her relationship with Trump is one of mutual respect. Analysts predict these threats will remain a characteristic of the Trump administration’s negotiation style, particularly this year when the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement (USMCA) is due for review.
