Donald Trump’s Greenland row ‘will make it simpler for Putin to take Ukraine,’ mouthpiece says

The US President’s obsession with nicking Greenland is seen by some in Russia as him being inspired by Mad Vlad to expand his country’s territory – and there is a belief the row could help Putin achieve his aims too

Donald Trump’s obsession with Greenland will help Russia take full control of Ukraine, a Kremlin mouthpiece has claimed. Vladimir Popov – Putin’s major general of aviation – said western leaders risk becoming preoccupied with “squabbling” over the island.

And he thinks that distraction will make it easier for Mad Vlad’s invading army to take Ukraine. He told Russian media: “Europe is becoming distracted by this situation, and they’re becoming insecure.

“And good, let them worry about it now. We’ll only hear small echoes. The more they’re preoccupied with squabbling among themselves, the easier it will be for us to complete our tasks in Ukraine.

“I’m not saying our achievements in Ukraine will grow exponentially, but they will be directly proportional to the situation.”

The Orange Manbaby seemed to u-turn on nicking Greenland by force last week during the World Economic Forum in Davos after previously vowing to slap tariffs on nations that opposed his bid to seize the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

But he later claimed he’s done a deal on the “framework of a future deal” for the nation, despite repeatedly confusing the country with Iceland during his rambling address to world leaders.

And the Kremlin is looking to exploit the row in the Russian media, with one insider claiming it had become “more important than the ‘special military operation’,” as the invasion of Ukraine is referred to.

The source believes the aim is to persuade Russians that Western countries are weak and that there is “nothing special” about Russia’s annexation of Crimea and other Ukrainian territories as powerful states are entitled to act that way.

Russian coverage of the row is supposed to emphasize that Trump “wants to go down in history as a leader who expanded his country’s territory” and is “guided by Vladimir Putin’s success.”

Popov, for his part, told the Pro-Kremlin Moskovskij Komsomolets newspaper: “There’s nothing wrong with him still haggling with Europe over Greenland.

“Tomorrow he’ll land troops in Greenland, buy off the entire local leadership, pay them a pittance, hang US flags, and hold a referendum. And that’s it. Denmark won’t be able to do anything.

“If a large country like Canada feels insecure next to the US, then what can we say about Denmark? Macron and Merz are shouting that they’ll help, but neither of them will even twitch against Trump, their leader. All their statements are a bluff.

“As soon as Trump makes a final decision on Greenland, they’ll immediately start changing their tune. They understand this perfectly well, but they want to save face, so they’re just keeping their mouths shut for now.”
