Putin mouthpiece boasts about new hypersonic missiles saying ‘Europe is defenceless’

Aleksey Zhuravlyov, a hardline nationalist MP, claimed Europe is ‘effectively defenceless’ against Russia’s hypersonic weapons and that Moscow can hit Western capitals and NATO bases

A top Russian official has ignited renewed World War Three anxieties after declaring Europe is essentially “defenceless” against Moscow’s cutting-edge hypersonic weaponry.

The alarming statement was published on Telegram by Aleksey Aleksandrovich Zhuravlyov, a hard-line nationalist MP and leader of the Rodina party, who referenced a German media piece about a recent Russian missile assault in Ukraine. Zhuravlyov cited an article from Berliner Zeitung covering the purported use of Russia’s so-called “Oreshnik” hypersonic missile during bombardments on Ukraine’s Lviv region.

He maintained the attack had sent tremors through political and military establishments throughout Europe. In his analysis, the Kremlin supporter suggested the strike served as a “clear signal” to the EU and NATO, maintaining that Russia had shown its capability to strike targets in “Western capitals” and at NATO military installations, reports the Express.

He declared that, when confronted with Moscow’s advanced weapons technology, Ukraine’s allies were “effectively defenceless” – an assertion not endorsed by the German publication itself.

The Berliner Zeitung piece concentrated on fresh missile bombardments on Ukraine, documenting that Moscow had deployed the Oreshnik system for the first time in months during intensive strikes on Kyiv and western areas of the nation.

However, Zhuravlyov’s provocative interpretation went considerably beyond this, exploiting the report to advance a narrative of Western weakness and military inadequacy. No particular cities were mentioned in his statement, nor did he directly threaten Britain or any other individual nation.

Zhuravlyov, who has previously delivered bellicose remarks about NATO and the West, is recognised for his militant rhetoric and has consistently issued warnings about direct conflict between Russia and Western powers.

The remarks arrive as friction between Russia and NATO remains at its peak since the Cold War, with concerns mounting over the potential for escalation as the conflict in Ukraine continues.

Western authorities have consistently rejected Russian assertions regarding the superiority of its hypersonic weaponry, whilst NATO insists it remains entirely equipped to protect its member nations.
