Doctor struck off after telling feminine medics to make use of their ‘well-endowed’ boobs as ping-pong bats

A doctor has been struck off after suggesting to two female colleagues that they use their “well-endowed” breasts in a ping-pong game.

Dr Velmurugan Kuppuswamy, 51, was attending a hospital medics’ house party where he made the inappropriate suggestion to two junior colleagues who were playing table tennis. The disciplinary hearing heard that Dr Kuppuswamy made a “forward thrusting motion” with his chest and suggested they use their chests as bats.

He allegedly told them they were “well-endowed in that area” – and that it would be an advantage in the game. At the same gathering, he is said to have hugged one woman before touching her back, squeezing her waist, pulling her towards him and smirking and winking at her.

His alleged harassment continued when she tried to pull away from him and told him he was hurting her as he held her wrist. He was accused of staring at a second female doctor who was dancing at the party, and telling her “go on keep doing that sexy dancing for me.”

The doctor allegedly moved his chair close to the same doctor so their shoulders touched before placing his hand on her thigh near her groin and squeezing her.

While working at an NHS hospital in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, he is accused of squeezing the same woman’s arm and calling her a “cheeky girl.” The doctor was accused of sexual misconduct of two junior colleagues by inappropriately touching them and making sexual comments towards them.

Dr Kuppuswamy is accused of creating “an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment” for women by behaving in a “sexually motivated” way. He faced a medical practitioners’ tribunal panel over allegations stemming from his time as a locum doctor at Withybush hospital.

It’s alleged that he messaged one female doctor, referring to her as “a perfect sweetheart” and saying: “I be there. If you dance with me.” The medical practitioners’ tribunal panel determined his actions showed “a pattern of sexually motivated behaviour”, amounting to predatory behaviour.

Dr Kuppuswamy, who graduated from a medical university in India in 1996, had been working at Withybush Hospital in Pembrokeshire as a locum consultant. His conduct was deemed to constitute sexual harassment. The tribunal also found that his actions demonstrated a failure to collaborate with colleagues and an abuse of his position.

Dr Kuppuswamy stated that none of the complaints pertained to patient safety or clinical care. To the tribunal, Dr Kuppuswamy said: “I have avoided any ambiguous situation completely and not attended social events that have involved junior colleagues.”

The tribunal’s findings read: “The Tribunal was of the opinion that Dr Kuppuswamy’s misconduct represented a pattern of sexually motivated behaviour over a period of time with multiple colleagues and multiple instances of unwanted physical touching.”

The panel ruled that Dr Kuppuswamy would be struck off the medical register with immediate effect. Panel chair Catherine Moxon declared erasure was “appropriate and proportionate” and that an immediate suspension order was essential in the public interest.
