BREAKING: Labour Scottish chief Anas Sarwar to ‘name on Keir Starmer to QUIT’

Labour’s leader in Scotland Anas Sarwar is expected to call on Keir Starmer to QUIT in a major blow to the Prime Minister’s authority.

The move from the most senior Labour figure yet to call on Mr Starmer to go will pile pressure on the under-fire PM, who has been left reeling by the departure of two top advisers less than 24 hours apart.

On Sunday the PM’s chief-of-staff and right-hand-man Morgan McSweeney resigned from his post amid the fallout from the Peter Mandelson scandal. And today Tim Allan quit as director of communications in Downing Street after less than a year in the post.

Mr Sarwar, who has led the Scottish Labour Party since 2021, is facing a crucial set of Holyrood elections in May and has scheduled a press conference for 2.30pm. He is set to call on Mr Starmer to resign as Prime Minister.

It follows days of chaos at the heart of government with two top advisers – including the PM’s chief-of-staff Morgan McSweeney and spin doctor Tim Allan – resigning from their posts amid the Peter Mandleson scandal fallout.

Earlier the Prime Minister’s spokesman insisted the PM will not resign. Instead they said Mr Starmer was “upbeat” and “confident” in an address to Downing Street staff on Monday morning.

Mr Starmer told his team: “The thing that makes me most angry is the undermining of the belief that politics can be a force for good and can change lives.

“I have been absolutely clear that I regret the decision that I made to appoint Peter Mandelson. And I’ve apologised to the victims which is the right thing to do.”

He also made clear he had no intention of quitting, telling advisers: “We must prove that politics can be a force for good. I believe it can. I believe it is.

“We go forward from here. We go with confidence as we continue changing the country.”
