BREAKING Super Bowl winner Barry Wilburn dies in home fireplace as tributes paid to NFL icon
A Super Bowl winner has been killed in a house fire as tributes have flooded in for the NFL icon.
Barry Wilburn, an NFL All-Pro and Washington Commanders icon, died in a house fire in Memphis on February 6. The Commanders, known as the Redskins when Wilburn was in their roster, confirmed his passing with an emotional statement.
“We’re saddened to learn of the passing of former Washington All-Pro and Super Bowl XXII champion Barry Wilburn,” the team posted on X. “Sending our deepest condolences to his family and friends.” According to local outlets, Memphis Fire Department responded to a call at around 2am Friday morning.
Firefighters discovered the former NFL cornerback unresponsive in a rear hallway, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Playing as a cornerback, Wilburn played in college at Mississippi before being drafted by Washington in 1985. And he quickly emerged as a defensive talent, leading the NFL in interceptions in 1987.
The Redskins won the Super Bowl that season, with Wilburn adding two interceptions to his 20 regular season catches during the showpiece. The Redskins bested Denver 42-10 to claim the Vince Lombardi trophy.
He would also turn out for the Cleveland Browns and the Philadelphia Eagles before retiring.
