Prince William ‘felt betrayed’ by ITV star over Harry and Meghan documentary
New biography about Prince William and Kate details how the future king ended his friendship with ITV presenter Tom Bradby after he made a documentary with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2019
Prince William reportedly severed ties with an ITV star after feeling ‘betrayed’ over his documentary featuring Prince Harry and Meghan. The Duke of Cambridge believed ITV News anchor Tom Bradby had “crossed a line” when he took part in a documentary with the Sussexes during their 2019 South African tour, where Harry disclosed that he and his brother were on “different paths”.
In a new biography, William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, penned by The Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers, it’s revealed that until then, William had formed a close bond with Bradby during his tenure as royal correspondent for the broadcaster.
However, the book discloses that William felt “betrayed and severely let down” after the journalist participated in the documentary, in which both Harry and Meghan discussed their struggles within the Royal Family.
The ITV documentary marked a turning point in the brothers’ relationship. In it, Harry addressed rumours of a rift between him and William for the first time, noting they had “good days” and “bad days”.
Meanwhile, Meghan spoke about her difficulties balancing motherhood with intense media scrutiny, lamenting that few people had asked if she was OK, reports the Mirror.
William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story discloses that upon his return from Africa after filming the documentary, Bradby reached out to William to express his worries about Harry’s mental health. However, an insider privy to the conversation revealed that William was livid, believing the journalist had sided with Harry.
The source stated: “William felt betrayed and severely let down. He considered Tom a friend, they had always got on and Harry was close to him too, but [William] never thought [Bradby] would take a side like he did.”
The book suggests that a major bone of contention for William was Bradby’s apparent reluctance to probe Harry or Meghan about the internal dynamics within the royal household – with insiders in the biography asserting that most of the family had ensured Meghan felt welcomed.
The source further commented: “Tom knew full well what Meghan was accused of and chose not to raise it in the documentary, whilst she ran roughshod over the family. As far as [William] was concerned, the friendship was over there and then.”
In an exclusive serialisation of the new biography by the Mirror, it’s revealed that the Princess of Wales showed less concern than Prince William in trying to prevent the Duke and Duchess of Sussex from stepping back from royal duties, deeming Prince Harry’s departure as “inevitable”. In further disclosures, the future queen eventually acknowledged she “could do no more to bring the brothers together” – despite previously acting as a “voice of reason” during the breakdown of their relationship.
The biography, which is available for pre-order now, also uncovers how William desired his disgraced uncle Andrew to be expelled from royal life immediately following his catastrophic BBC Newsnight interview in 2019. It additionally reveals the true account of how William and Kate felt about the Sussexes’ exit from royal duties and offers unprecedented insight into how the Princess of Wales coped with her shocking cancer diagnosis.
The book also sheds light on the Prince and Princess of Wales’s journey from their initial encounter at St Andrews University to the present day, and how they’ve moulded their vision for a contemporary monarchy and its secure future during a period of intense upheaval and change.
