Major UK brewery enters liquidation as beer pulled from Asda and Aldi cabinets
Scottish craft brewery Overtone Brewing Co has entered liquidation, with its range of pale ales, IPAs and stouts pulled from major supermarkets including Asda and Aldi
Devotees of a British brewery have voiced their dismay after it vanished from supermarket shelves. The collection of pale ales, IPAs and stouts from Overtone was stocked at Asda and Aldi, alongside smaller and independent off-licences.
Nevertheless, following the brewery’s collapse, distribution to UK supermarkets has been suspended. Overtone Brewing Co., situated in Scotland, confirmed it entered liquidation last week.
The firm gained recognition for its distinctive craft beers, presented in striking packaging. The label is expected to be acquired by fresh ownership, but it has halted beer deliveries to supermarkets and local retailers temporarily.
A statement was issued in The Gazette on Tuesday, disclosing that liquidators were installed on February 13. George Dylan Lafferty, an insolvency specialist from Begbies Traynor, has been named Provisional Liquidator of Overtone Brewing Ltd, the announcement confirmed.
Enthusiasts and stockists have expressed their dismay at the development. One outlet that stocked Overtone beer, The Wee Beer Shop, posted a message on social media regarding the liquidation announcement, reports the Express.
“What a shame – they produced some of the best IPAs in the UK a few years ago,” the post reads.
“If you have a hankering to try one last beer, their latest – Stovies – is as good as some of the ones they brewed in the past. I still have cans for sale.”
Another patron commented: “Awful news, I loved Overtone. Normally, they’re the only decent craft on draft down in Ayr.”
No official shutdown of the brewery has been declared, but it has been verified that it’s halting beer deliveries to supermarkets and off-licences nationwide, with no comeback date revealed.
When looked up on Google, it appears as temporarily closed. “Overtone is undergoing liquidation, but a new owner will continue to operate the brewery and brand in the future,” a spokesperson said.
Another punter branded it “awful news”, whilst another simply said: “Sad times”.
Liquidation is a legal procedure to assist a firm in disposing of its assets. In most cases, the ultimate outcome is the shuttering of the business and a halt to trading and/or operations.
The funds generated from offloading these assets are then utilised to settle debts when they can no longer pay by other means.
