Met Police plead for Government to delay launch of emails the place Mandelson was quizzed over Epstein

Police have asked the Government to delay the publication of emails in which Downing Street questioned Peter Mandelson about his links to Jeffrey Epstein, it has emerged.

Sir Keir Starmer‘s former chief of staff Morgan McSweeney emailed Lord Mandelson to query his ties to the paedophile before he was appointed Britain’s ambassador to the US in December 2024.

The email was said to have probed why the disgraced ex-Labour minister kept in touch with the paedophile after his conviction and why he stayed at Epstein’s New York home while he was in prison.

The Metropolitan Police has asked the Government not to publish the exchange yet in order to avoid undermining a criminal investigation, according to Politico.

It means Sir Keir could be forced to delay publishing key evidence that backs up his claim that Lord Mandelson ‘lied’ about his relationship with Epstein.

Earlier this month, Scotland Yard launched an investigation into revelations that Lord Mandelson allegedly tipped off Epstein about confidential, market-sensitive government plans.

It means the former Labour peer could eventually face allegations of misconduct in public office.

The Government will be forced by Parliament to disclose all communications with Lord Mandelson before and after he was made US ambassador.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said on Monday that the Government is working to ‘publish that first set of documents as soon as possible’.

A Met Police spokesman said: ‘We will review material identified and provided to us by the Cabinet Office to assess whether publication is likely to have a detrimental impact on our investigation or any subsequent prosecution.’
