London’s Gatwick Airport’s train station was evacuated following reports of a man being seen with two firearms. Police said he was arrested for possession of two imitation firearms
Need to know: Gatwick gun scare sees station evacuated
- Gatwick Airport’s train station was evacuated on Friday (February 20) after reports of a man carrying two firearms on a train from Brighton. One traveller described the scene as “chaos” as crowds formed outside the busy station. Police officers were waiting for the train when it arrived at 1:25pm.
- British Transport Police and Sussex Police arrested the man on arrival. Officers later revealed the weapons were imitation firearms, not real guns.
- A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “We received a report at 12.45pm on 20 February of a man on board a train from Brighton with a firearm.” Sussex Police confirmed the force “detained a man on a train at 1.25pm on 20 February, when it pulled into Gatwick Airport.”
- He was arrested for possession of two imitation firearms.
- All train lines through Gatwick Airport have now reopened. Gatwick Express, Thameslink and Southern Rail services are running again but passengers should allow an extra 30 minutes for journeys.
