A Winter Olympics star was rushed off the slopes after they were left motionless following a horrifying crash.

Cassie Sharpe had to be stretchered off the halfpipe course when she took a tumble in Thursday’s freeski qualifiers. After the heavy crash, the 33-year-old was left motionless as medical help rushed to her; she was treated on the course for around nine minutes as shocked spectators watched on in stunned silence.

However, once she was placed on a stretcher and taken away, she offered fans an encouraging sign as she waved, which was met with a huge roar in Livigno – but her mum, dad and brother were in tears.

The 33-year-old claimed gold in 2018 and silver in 2022, and she had scored 88.25 in her first run – which was good enough for third spot in the qualifying standings, behind British star Zoe Atkin and Li Fanghui of China.

She is now not expected to compete on Saturday’s final. Defending champion Eileen Gu also made the final despite falling during her first run.

In a statement, the Canadian Olympic Committee said: “Freestyle skier Cassie Sharpe was injured on course during the women’s freestyle ski halfpipe qualification round.

“She is in a stable condition and is being evaluated by COC and Freestyle Canada medical staff.”

Sharpe had retired after the 2022 games, but in 2024 decided to comeback for one final tilt at a gold medal. Ahead of the games, she said: “I have two Olympic medals, I obviously want to perform well, I obviously want to do the thing.
