Race ace Lewis Hamilton has revealed the secret to his success – praising himself while he brushes his teeth. The Formula 1 legend said he starts giving himself a pep talk every morning as he reaches for his toothpaste.
Sir Lewis, 41, admitted: “Positive affirmations are probably the most important thing of all.
“When you’re brushing your teeth or starting your day, say positive affirmations about how your day is going to go, what your goal is, how you’re going to feel, how you’ll approach the job or meet people. When you speak positively about yourself, your body reacts to that.”
The motor-racing star, who has a joint-record seven Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship titles tied with Michael Schumacher, has shared fitness tips with Men’s Health.
He added: “When I was younger, I think the training was really my therapy – and it still kind of is, particularly the runs. That’s where I get most of my thinking done.
“Ultimately, it’s no different to what people at home do if they go to the gym. But I struggle with all the same things that most people struggle with in a workout.
“Adding things such as yoga and breathwork has helped. Breathwork has probably taken the longest to get into because it takes time.
“Then meditation – adding those things into your day is useful. I think the ice bath helps with that, too, because you need to learn to breathe and overcome the thoughts of wanting to give up, wanting to get out.
“Those things really help me stay positive through the year.”
Meanwhile Lewis, who holds the sport’s records for most wins, pole positions and podium finishes, told his 42.3m Insta followers that he has no plans to retire after testing his new car and is “excited for the season ahead”.
He said: “I’m re-set and refreshed. I’m not going anywhere, so stick with me. For a moment, I forgot who I was, but thanks to you and your support you’re not going to see that mindset again.
“I know what needs to be done. This is going to be one hell of a season. I’ve given everything to be here today. Let’s go team!!!”
