Prince William’s seven-word assertion as he is questioned about Royal Family’s future

The Princess of Wales spoke passionately about maternal mental health as she and Prince William visited Powys, meeting mothers supported by Mums Matter perinatal service

The Princess of Wales has discussed her enthusiasm for mothers’ mental health during a visit to Powys. William and Kate chatted with volunteer groups at Hafan yr Afon, a centre for culture, community and heritage in Newtown.

Kate spent time with members of Mums Matter, a perinatal service for women who are experiencing mental health difficulties related to early motherhood. Ella Hopkins, 25, told the princess how she began volunteering with the service after escaping domestic violence with her 10-month-old son Marcus.

She said: “The princess was absolutely incredible, you could tell she was really passionate about the cause as well. “She got really invested, she was asking lots of questions, you could tell she thought it was an important thing to be focusing on.

“She definitely said that it’s something that she said felt passionate about, parents being able to be committed and devoted through their own stability.”

The royal pair also visited Oriel Davies, a public contemporary art gallery situated in Newtown. They viewed the Hand in Hand art project, a community initiative co-produced by the gallery and Syrian and Afghani families living in Newtown and surrounding areas.

“It’s amazing what’s happening here,” Kate told the families. “It must be such a lovely way to make friends and share stories.”

Whilst visiting the gallery, she was presented with a necklace crafted by children at an art workshop on Thursday morning. The royal family is enduring a turbulent period with the arrest of William’s uncle Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

However, the prince and princess received a warm welcome in Newtown and paused to chat with well-wishers in the street on three occasions during their visit.

Jill Christofides, 65, assured William “the monarchy is safe in your hands”.

“With all that is going on at the moment, there could be a swell against,” she told reporters afterwards. “But I think when you see the time that he’s willing to spend with the people, I think it’s lovely to see.

“He said ‘thank you, that’s very sweet of you’.”
