Ian Huntley clubbed in ‘unbelievably savage’ assault whereas suspected attacker ‘gutted’ he’s alive
The con believed to have carried out the savage attack on Soham child killer Ian Huntley is ‘gutted’ the murderer isn’t dead, despite his 5% chance of pulling through
Murderer Ian Huntley was clubbed from behind up to 15 times, while he bent down to tie string on a recycling crate, it’s understood.
The Soham child killer has been given a five% chance of surviving, after his attacker split his head open with a three-foot metal pole, as other cons watched the horrific attack unfurl inside Durham’s HMP Franklin prison on Thursday morning.
Triple murderer Anthony Russell is suspected of carrying out the attack and faces 10 years in isolation. According to reports, the crim allegedly shouted “I’ve done it, I’ve done it” after Huntley, 52, was repeatedly smashed over the head at the Category A jail.
The 43-year-old has shown no remorse for the attack and is believed to have said he is “gutted” Huntley, who killed school girls and best friends Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002, is not dead.
Huntley remains in an induced coma in hospital. He has a broken jaw, brain and skull injuries and is hooked up to a ventilator.
A source told The Sun that the “attack was unbelievably savage”, and more that what has been reported.
“It is astonishing that Huntley is still alive,” they said.
They added that Huntley was bending down tying string onto a recycling crate, bent like he was tying his shoelaces, when he was initially struck.
“And people who saw it say he was battered around 15 times – Russell just kept hitting and hitting him,” the source continued.
Many of the inmates knew an attack was coming, the source claimed, and that some prisoners were taking about it the night before – yet none of the cons who saw the attack helped.
The source added: “They just watched it happen and it was staff who stepped in – but not before the attacker had inflicted some really severe damage.
“Everyone thought Huntley was dead and inmates and staff are absolutely stunned he is still alive.”
The source said that following the attack, Russell was handcuffed and was smirking as he was led away to the chapel.
They added: “He has apparently admitted the attack in interviews and said he was proud of it.
“But he has also said he is ‘gutted’ that Huntley is still alive – because he was sure he’d killed him.”
The jail went into lockdown following the attack as officers searched cells for weapons for fear of copycat attacks.
