Man Utd participant rankings vs Newcastle: Five 5/10s poor as unbeaten run ended
Manchester United were beaten 2-1 by 10-man Newcastle at St James’ Park in Michael Carrick’s first defeat, with William Osula scoring a late winner for the hosts
Manchester United experienced their first loss under Michael Carrick as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat by 10-man Newcastle at St James’ Park.
The match sparked into action just before the interval. Jacob Ramsey was dismissed after receiving a second yellow card for simulation, prior to Anthony Gordon earning and converting a penalty, with Bruno Fernandes committing the foul.
In the ninth minute of first-half stoppage time, when only a minimum of three had been indicated, Fernandes delivered a free-kick which Casemiro nodded in. United seemed set for a draw until William Osula’s late goal clinched all three points for the home side. Here’s how the United players performed at St James’ Park.

Senne Lammens: Astutely slowed the game down when United were under pressure in the early stages of the first half and was once again reliable in his duties. 7
Noussair Mazraoui: In the squad in place of Dalot. Challenged by Barnes in the first half and relieved to see him substituted at half-time. Booked for a reckless and unnecessary foul on Elanga. 5
Leny Yoro: Has faced challenges this season but this was a marked improvement. Covered ground for Mazraoui at times and defended with determination and astuteness. 6
Harry Maguire: A challenging day for him following the verdict in a Greek court at lunchtime but he didn’t allow it to affect his performance. Sturdy at the back and prevailed in numerous battles. 6
Luke Shaw: Booked for a challenge on Elanga when he had coped well against his former colleague until that point. Withdrawn on the hour as he battled with the lingering effects of illness. 6
Casemiro: Joelinton got the upper hand over him at times and careless with the ball, especially for the penalty, but demonstrated resilience to emerge with the equaliser. 6
Kobbie Mainoo: Forced Ramsdale into a fine stop but arguably his poorest display since returning to the side. Hurried in possession and struggled to impose himself. 5
Bryan Mbeumo: Booked for a challenge on Hall and endured a disappointing outing. Squandered a magnificent first-half opportunity when blasting the ball into the Gallowgate End. 5
Bruno Fernandes: Wayward pass to Cunha and challenge on Gordon for a penalty epitomised his opening 45 minutes, but characteristic of him that he delivered with the assist for Casemiro. 6
Matheus Cunha: Had the measure of Trippier in the first half and troubled Ramsdale, but once more failed to provide significant width, particularly after the break. 6
Benjamin Sesko: Combination play and capacity to retain possession were noteworthy. Created an opportunity for himself in the first half and received insufficient service. 5
Substitutes:
Diogo Dalot: Ought to have struck a shot immediately when discovered in the box. Provided some width down the right flank. 6
Manuel Ugarte: Delivered one of his more promising performances from the bench. Produced a good header, nearly scored, and brought a sense of control to the midfield. 7
Amad : Had little time to make an impact. 6 .
Joshua Zirkzee: Tried his best to create something. Forced Ramsdale into good save from distance. 7
Tyrell Malacia: Allowed Osula to cut inside far too easily. 5
Subs not used : Bayindir, Heaven, Kukonki, T. Fletcher.
