Blur star Damon Albarn takes on AI engaged on movie about ChatGPT

Blur and Gorillaz mainman Damon Albarn is scoring Artificial, Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming movie about the makers of ChatGPT but believes AI can’t make soulful music: “I don’t think it’s possible for AI to make soulful music.”

Damon Albarn is working on music for a film about AI but insists technology will never make better art than humans.

The Blur singer has confirmed he is scoring Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming OpenAI movie, Artificial about the creation of ChatGPT, due for release later this year.

Damon spilled: “I’ve been quite involved with AI because I’ve been making a score for a movie called Artificial at the moment, which is all about the founders of ChatGPT.

“So I’ve had a lot of time to think about it. Music and art should not be easy. Once it becomes easy, it’s meaningless. In a way, it’s the things you don’t see or hear that make it art.

“It’s a weird intuition that the listener has that picks up on the journey that the artist has been through to make that particular thing with the tone of the voice, etc. You can’t replace that.”

Albarn also discussed the sue of AI in the music industry and told The Needle Drop. “I think there was a foolish moment where the big corporations thought AI was going to make their life easier and more money.

“And well, that is not the case. It’s just going to… I don’t think it’s possible for AI to make soulful music.”

Albarn, whose latest Gorillaz album The Mountain is on course for No1, first spoke about the movie in Uncut: “I’m currently working on the score to Luca Guadagnino’s film Artificial, about [OpenAI CEO] Sam Altman. I’m singing some songs and writing some electronic and orchestral backing.”

Artificial is set in 2023 when Sam Altman was fired, then rehired as the CEO of the ChatGPT company. Andrew Garfield has signed on to play Altman, with Ike Barinholtz has been cast as Elon Musk.

Albarn follows Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor who composed the music for Guadagnino’s past movies including Challengers, Queer and After the Hunt.

Albarn loves stepping out of the pop comfort zone having previously made an opera based on Elizabethan scientist John Dee in 2011 and produced music for a 2015 Alice in Wonderland musical. He also scored Mauritanian film director Abderrahmane Sissako’s opera Le Vol du Boli.

He’s also thought to be working on another opera based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s The Magic Flute Part Two.

Gorillaz kick off a UK and Irish tour in Manchester next Friday March 20, and play a huge gig at London’s Tottenham Stadium in the summer.
