Jonny Clayton opens up on purpose behind darts success – ‘need to good the sport’

EXCLUSIVE: Jonny Clayton has enjoyed a brilliant start to the Premier League campaign and the world No.5 has his new finely tuned darts to thank

Jonny Clayton is playing some of the best darts he has since ‘The Year of The Ferret’ in 2021, when he scooped the Premier League, World Grand Prix, Masters and the World Series Finals.

The Welshman has climbed back up to world No.5 following his quarter-final run at the World Championships and is looking to kick on again ahead of the UK Open this weekend by continuing his good Premier League start.

One nightly win and three semi-final appearances has Clayton top of the table heading into his home night in Cardiff in a positive mood.

Clayton, who is an ambassador for leading darts manufacturer, Red Dragon, spoke exclusively to Daily Star Sport about his new fine-tuned Red Dragon darts set behind his promising start to the tournament.

“As a player, I want to perfect the game,” ‘The Ferret’ said. “So I make little changes here and there on my darts.

“I sit down with Lee Huxtable (Chief Manufacturing Officer) and obviously with Red Dragon. Obviously Lee has ideas, I have ideas, we try to put both together and we try to perfect the dart.

“I don’t change much about my darts. It’s just a little bit more on the grip more than anything else.

“It’s the same shape of dart, same weight, which is a 22 gram, and the flights that I’m now throwing with are working for me as it shows in the Premier League on Thursday night.

“But not only that, my performances are pretty consistent so things are going good for myself.”

Clayton has also been playing with the brand new Winmau Blade X board, offering deeper beds and better durability.

“At the end of the day I’ve played on a lot of different dartboards, you know, this play X that’s out now, it’s fantastic,” he added.

“The colours on it are so bright. There’s no default for a player. You can see everything clearly. The wires are shaped for the dart for the player’s advantage really – basically everything is right.

“I have no complaints. I have no dropouts. The board personally for myself. I think it’s a great intervention.”
