Brits must do three issues immediately if there’s a nuclear strike on UK
The UK government has issued crucial safety advice for its citizens on what to do if there is ever a nuclear strike or radiation emergency on British soil.
As the US-Israel and Iran conflict continues to escalate, tensions are mounting worldwide with citizens growing increasingly worried. Since 28 February, 1,286 civilians have lost their lives in the fighting according to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). Among these fatalities, at least 200 were innocent, defenceless children.
The former Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who governed the nation with an iron fist for 36 years and six months, was killed in Tehran during the opening strikes targeting Iran’s leadership and military infrastructure.
Amidst all the bloodshed and devastation across the Middle East, combined with the continuing conflict between Russia and Ukraine plus the Israel-Hamas war, concerns for civilian protection have reached unprecedented levels.
Recent days have witnessed horrifying assaults on oil, gas, aviation, maritime, and tourist infrastructure across the Gulf region, with no end to this conflict in sight, reports the Express.
Drones, rockets, warplanes are all frightening, yet the population’s greatest terror remains atomic warfare.
Currently, nine nations globally possess nuclear arsenals, specifically – Russia, the United States, China, France, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, India, Israel, and North Korea.
Combined with the long-standing worry and mistrust that the Islamic Republic of Iran maintains a clandestine nuclear weapons programme they’ve been developing to construct their own atomic bomb – we face the prospect of devastation beyond our comprehension. Whilst assertions regarding Iran’s supposed nuclear arsenal have never been substantiated, the concept alone is deeply unsettling.
Indeed, the prospect of any nation developing atomic weapons whilst global tensions escalate daily is truly terrifying.
Against this backdrop, the UK government has issued safety guidance for citizens facing the potential threat of a nuclear attack on Britain or a radiological incident.
So, as a UK resident, what steps should you take if the unimaginable occurs and our nation faces a radiation crisis?
Go in
The initial action during a radiation emergency, according to GOV.UK, is to head indoors. The guidance is straightforward: “The most important thing to do if you are told you are near a radiation emergency is go indoors as soon as you can and stay there. Close the doors and windows and stay as far away from external walls as possible.”
Stay in
Subsequently, you must stay put.
“Staying indoors reduces your exposure to any radiation outside. You will be given advice on what to do next. Turn off all fans and air conditioning and close all external doors, windows and vents where possible. You will be given advice on what to do next. You may need to stay indoors for one to two days,” according to the UK government’s radiation emergency recommendations.
Tune in
The third measure the UK government encourages its citizens to take is keeping a close eye on news developments. According to the guidance: “Monitor the news and follow official UK advice on GOV.UK for what to do next. Any changes to advice will be communicated to you via official sources – this may be via the radio, television, internet, social media or the police.”
It’s crucial to stay informed and adhere to your nation’s official guidance during national emergencies and catastrophes.
