‘I discovered a easy approach to save £20 off my Easter Sunday roast from Sainsbury’s’

Shoppers can save money on a traditional Easter Sunday roast this year by using a simple supermarket trick that slashes the bill from £50 to £30

Anyone hosting Easter will know just how rapidly the cost of a traditional Sunday roast can mount up. From the star attraction meat to all the accompaniments, nothing beats a proper home-cooked roast – but I’ve discovered a supermarket trick that means it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to feed the family this Bank Holiday.

Ahead of the long weekend, I managed to slash my Easter food shop almost in half at Sainsbury’s – and it all boiled down to one straightforward thing. Shopping online, I reduced my bill from £50 to £30, simply by entering my Nectar card at the checkout.

Thanks to the supermarket’s Nectar prices, which give those signed up to a free membership access to discounts, I was able to save over £20 on my basket without sacrificing quality. Naturally, the reductions are only available for those registered for a Nectar card, so customers without one won’t see the same cuts at the checkout.

This comes as the retailer is offering ‘better than half price’ with Nectar prices on selected joints, which includes a British or New Zealand Whole Leg of Lamb – a traditional choice for Easter. Weighing approximately 2.3kg, it’s priced at £33.40, but plummets dramatically to £15.70 with a Nectar card.

From there, it’s straightforward to construct a complete roast around it using other reduced essentials. No lamb dinner is complete without mint sauce, and a jar of Ocean Spray Mint Sauce 200g is £1.35 with a Nectar card, or £1.80 without.

Reared by trusted farmers, this whole leg of lamb is now better than half price with a Nectar Card ahead of the Easter Bank Holiday

Meanwhile, a pack of 10 Aunt Bessie’s Glorious Golden Yorkshire Puddings is now priced at £1.75, down from £2.50, and a tub of Bisto Gravy Granules has been reduced from £2.95 to £2.25. Also on offer for Nectar card holders is Sainsbury’s Sage Roast Onion and Shallot Stuffing, with a saving of 50p, bringing the price down to £1.90 from £2.40, reports the Mirror.

Not part of the deal, but arguably essential for a roast dinner, are loose parsnips, which have been price-matched with Aldi at £1.48 for 1kg, and roast potatoes available for £6. In total, everything needed for a proper Easter spread should have cost £50.53, but with the Nectar card discount, my bill came to £30.43.

Elsewhere, Cook is offering a Lamb Easter Dinner Box for 6, priced at £77.45, which works out at £12.90 per person. It includes a slow-roasted shoulder of lamb with white wine and rosemary jus, dauphinoise potatoes, red cabbage and a trio of greens.

Alternatively, Iceland has launched two roast dinner boxes designed to feed a family of four. There’s a lamb dinner option priced at £30, and a slightly more affordable chicken version at £25. Each box includes everything needed for a complete roast, including gravy and trimmings.

Lamb might not be everyone’s go-to for a roast, but Sainsbury’s has equally enticing deals across other meats – all accessible with a Nectar card. The Scottish salmon side is now half price, down from £21.60 to just £10.80 with Nectar, while the British pork crackling leg joint has been reduced by a third to £5.78 (originally £8.68). Regrettably for beef enthusiasts, it seems the British or Irish 21 Day Matured Lean Beef Roasting Joint, previously under £10 from £22.32, appears to be sold out at the time of writing.

For me, this offer transformed what could have been a £50+ shop into a much more manageable £30, feeding a family of four for roughly £7.50 per person. Shoppers can grab everything they need for their Easter Sunday roast on the Sainsbury’s website and unlock lower prices with Nectar.
