Starmer breaks silence over Trump’s Iran ceasefire as heads to fulfill Gulf leaders
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has broken his silence on Donald Trump’s overnight ceasefire agreement with Iran as the Prime Minister announced travel plans travels to the region to meet leaders of Gulf countries.
The US President agreed to a provisional two-week ceasefire in the Iran war after pulling back following a last-minute warning to Iran that “a whole civilisation will die”.
Less than two hours before his deadline passed for Iran to agree a deal, Trump said he was suspending his threat to widen the military offensive to power plants and bridges subject to the reopening of the critical Strait of Hormuz waterway.
Starmer has now spoken out in “support” of the agreement and hopes it will become a “lasting agreement”.
The PM said: “I welcome the ceasefire agreement reached overnight, which will bring a moment of relief to the region and the world.
“Together with our partners we must do all we can to support and sustain this ceasefire, turn it into a lasting agreement and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.”
