Two canines useless after horror assault as pet was ‘combating’ to avoid wasting injured proprietor

Kayla Colwill has was bitten on the hand as her three-year-old cavapoo Herbie was horrifically killed by another dog after it had escaped from a nearby garden as she said her pet was “fighting for his mum”

A woman has described her “trauma” after her dog was fatally mauled while attempting to protect her. Three-year-old cavapoo Herbie was killed in Cornwall last week by another dog, which had broken free from a garden.

The attacking dog has since been destroyed following the incident in Padstow last Thursday (April 2). The attack saw Herbie being shaken around before being dropped. It was then that his owner was targeted by the other dog, but a visibly injured Herbie still came to her rescue.

Herbie’s owner Kayla Colwill also suffered injuries during the assault, receiving bite wounds after the dog came for her, reports Devon Live.

The traumatised 27-year-old said: “[The dog] was shaking my dog round, and then he dropped my dog where I could see that my dog’s back legs had gone.

“And he came for me and bit me on the hand. And then my dog was like, ‘no way’ and bit the dog on the butt to say ‘no, you’re not going for her’. And yeah, that was just the end of my dog.

“He went down fighting for his mum. It was one of the most traumatic things.”

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that the dog responsible for the injuries has since been put to sleep. A second dog seized at the scene has been returned to its owner.

The owner has also received a Dog Control Order. A force spokesperson said: “We were called following a report of a dog attack in Boyd Avenue, Padstow, on April 2.

“It was reported a dog escaped from a property and attacked another dog, causing fatal injuries. The owner of the injured dog was also hurt.

“The dog that caused the injuries has since been euthanised.

“Another dog seized at the scene – that didn’t escape the garden and was not involved in the attack – has been returned to the owner after relevant checks were completed. The owner has been issued a Dog Control Order.”
