Grand National horse Get On George put down as ITV halt protection with tragic announcement

Get On George is the second horse to die during the Grand National Festival, after Gold Dancer also died earlier in the week at Aintree

ITV halted their Grand National coverage on Saturday at Aintree to announce the death of Get On George.

The six-year-old gelding was put down after pulling up during the 1.20pm William Hill Handicap Hurdle on Saturday. Get On George lost its action around the bend

He is the second horse to die during this festival at Aintree, the same amount as 12 months ago, when Celebre D’Allen and Willy De Houelle died. The first to die this year, Gold Dancer, broke its back while winning the Mildmay Novices’ Chase, with the nine-year-old collapsing after crossing the line before being euthanised.

ITV host Ed Chamberlin paused the broadcast to say: “Sorry for looking at my phone while you guys were talking there, but it’s the news about Get On George. He was pulled up and quickly dismounted.

“Aintree say he was assessed on course by their expert veterinary team and it was decided the best course of action for the horse’s welfare was for him to be put down. It’s described as humanely euthanised.

“They say their heartfelt condolences are with connections. We echo that, to the Parkinsons, the Smiths – Sue Smith actually owns the horse as well. I always try to get the groom’s name, as you know, and it’s Riley, Paul Riley, who now has to deal with that. Our deepest sympathies to you all.”
