Man, 28, seems in court docket over daylight ‘smash-and-grab’ raid of household jewellers in Richmond
A 28-year-old man appeared in court yesterday in connection with a horrifying daylight raid of a family-run jewellers in Richmond.
Two men were seen smashing the windows of Gregory & Co jewellers with a large hammer on January 31 in a video that has since gone viral online.
In footage filmed by an onlooker, brave shop workers could be seen trying to fend them off before the pair fled on foot with the items.
The robbery took place on Paved Court, a popular pedestrian street and tourist attraction known as a filming location for the American TV show Ted Lasso.
Deniz Mehmet, from Aveley, Essex, was arrested on Wednesday and the following day was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery.
Mehmet, who appeared at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court, is the third man to have been charged in relation to the incident.

Robert Clarke, 50, of Rochford, and Lee Ramsey, 46, of Harlow, and Deniz Mehmet, 28,of Everley have all been remanded in custody in relation to the incident
Two men, Robert Clarke, 50, of Rochford, and Lee Ramsey, 46, of Harlow were arrested on March 31. They appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court the next day.
All three have been remanded in custody and are due before Kingston Crown Court on April 28.
Detective Chief Inspector Scott Mather, from the Met’s Flying Squad, said: ‘Across the Met we are working hard to tackle retail crime, including robbery and shoplifting, as we know the significant impact these incidents have on shop workers and communities.
‘We have carried out extensive enquiries into this incident over the past few months and have now charged three people.’
