Fragrance is deeply personal and subjective but that doesn’t mean there isn’t scope to level up your scent this year.
If you’re tired of smelling like everyone else (Dior Sauvage I’m looking at you) or are simply looking to reboot your aftershave wardrobe with a new spring or winter perfume, then allow us to save you a painstaking shopping trip. You know the kind, the one that ends with countless sample swabs until you become ‘nose blind’ and give up, defeated.
We’ve sampled dozens of men’s perfumes across a range of world-leading brands and scent profiles – narrowing them down to the very best all in one place.
These include both splurge-worthy, luxury picks from Bulgari and Prada, as well as some more nostalgic perfumes and modestly-priced options from Davidoff that are friendlier on the pocket, ensuring you have options no matter your budget.
Men’s fragrances are generally classified into five families: woody, amber, fresh, botanical and leather. Of course, within each family there are countless combinations of top, base and middle notes, so these are simply guiding principles rather than hard or fast rules.
It’s also true that the same scene can smell different on two different people, based on unique skin chemistry, body temperature, oil levels and even diet.
Nevertheless, we’ve tested options that will have everyone asking what you’re wearing.
Read on for our top picks and sure to also take a look at our FAQs with tips on how to apply your perfume and how to ensure your fragrance lasts all day.

Best men’s fragrance of 2026: Quick list
How we test
When testing fragrance, we try each scent out for several consecutive days to account for both first impressions and daily wear.
We factor in lasting power, how a scent evolves on the skin and how it is received by others.
Contrary to popular belief, it’s best not to rub your wrists together immediately after application, as doing so disrupts the molecular structure of the perfume and can destabilise the blend’s top notes.
To give prospective buyers an informed shopping experience, we’re sure to list all top, middle and base notes as outlined by the perfumiers behind each blend.
This is supplemented by our own opinion about which aspects of the scent are the most dominant, as well as how the notes harmonise together.

Bvlgari Le Gemme Tygar Extrait Parfum
Product Specs
- Sizes available100ml
- Scent notesCitrus woody notes, grapefruit and ambergris
What we love
-
Fragrance journeyEvolving from fresh citrus to warming amber and eventually leather and oud, this is a scent voyage in a bottle
-
Turbo-chargedThis is a darker, more intense and long-lasting version of the original Tygar, making it perfect for evening wear
-
Dripping in decadenceEven the bottle looks like a work of art, a welcome burst of opulence on my bathroom shelf
Review
This might just be the most luxurious fragrance I’ve ever worn in my life – and I don’t say that lightly.
Inspired by the warmth and luminosity of the tiger’s eye gemstone, this scent opens with a citrus burst of Italian grapefruit accord and a flash of warming ginger.
This is soon softened by ambergris heart and ambrette, before giving way to creamy, resinous benzoin Siam and Peru balsam.
The dry down leans into leather and oud – the biggest departure from the lighter, fruitier Tygar that came before it.
Extrait is darker, heavier and more long-lasting too – making it perfect for evening wear.
I’ll be wearing this to black tie events: awards ceremonies, gala dinners, basically the fanciest events in calendar.
It’s a pleasure to wear and to top it all off the bottle looks stunning on my bathroom shelf.
As the priciest fragrance among the list it’s of course it’s a splurge, but if you enjoy decadence and are willing to treat yourself (or someone else), this is truly the crème de la crème.

Ralph’s Club New York

What we love
-
Distinctively deliciousBlackcurrant and vanilla give this a gourmand edge that never feels sickly sweet
-
Fougère freshnessFir balsam, moss and lavender bring balance with aromatic, foresty middle notes
-
Air of the unexpectedThis is unlike any other Ralph Lauren scent I’ve tried and is all the better for it, expect to stand out from the crowd wearing this
Review
Inspired by the energy of New York City, this scent is vibrant, aromatic and sensual.
Juicy blackcurrant – used in men’s fragrance for the first time here – along with creamy vanilla bring a distinctive gourmand flair, but not one that ever feels sickly sweet.
Perhaps this is because luminous green mandarin and invigorating bergamot bring an air or brightness for balance.
Meanwhile heady lavender, velvety moss and bourbon geranium round things out with and air of the fougere, underscored by Australian sandalwood.
In layman’s terms, this scent is hedonistic, decadent and unapologetic, perfect for the charmer or loveable rogue.
I’ll be wearing this on the dancefloor, at house parties or dousing myself it in after a day in the office when I want to shift from work to play mode.

Prada Paradigme
Product Specs
- Scent notesTop note: Calabrian Bergamot Heart, Heart note: Bourbon Geranium, Base note: Ambery woods
- Size50ml
What we love
-
Understated charmThe soft blend of woody and amber notes makes this perfect for everyday wear, summoning an air of quiet elegance
-
Perfect giftBetween the gorgeous bottle and balanced scent profile this is an ideal gift, as it’s unlikely to rub anyone up the wrong way
-
Burst of freshnessGreen bourbon geranium and Calabrian bergamot heart bring a gorgeous floral dimension to the blend
Review
This beautifully balanced fragrance oozes quiet confidence and sophistication, a true gentleman’s scent.
In a world of gimmicks and shock factor, Paradigme is understated, classic and tempered in the best way.
It opens with warming amber and woodiness thanks to Peru balm, benzoin resin and Guaiac wood.
However, it’s the floral freshness that follows which really elevates things, with green bourbon geranium and Calabrian bergamot heart bringing aromatic brightness as the heart notes emerge.
I challenge anyone not to enjoy this fragrance, which in my opinion, makes it a great option for gifting or buying blind.
It may not be reinventing the wheel, but it’s clean, soft and elegant in a way that makes it great for everyday wear.

Givenchy Gentleman Society Ambree
Product Specs
- Scent notesTop Notes: Sage, Juniper Berries, Nutmeg, Heart Notes: Narcissus, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Base Notes: Tobacco Absolute, Balm Essence, Vanilla
- Size60ml
What we love
-
Warming wonderResinous woody notes, vanilla, nutmeg and tobacco give this an opulent, glowing warmth
-
Balancing actOrris, narcissus and vetiver offset the sweeter, smokier notes and bring a hit of fougère to temper the scent profile
-
Going for goldWho says glamour is just for the girls? This champagne gold and black glass bottle is a marvel on the shelf, evoking the brand’s trademark sense of luxury
Review
This reboot of Gentleman Society is the most opulent and flamboyant yet, cutting creamy vanilla with smoky tobacco absolute and sandalwood.
The brand describes spritzing yourself with this as ‘shrouding yourself with gold’ and it’s fair to say that the scent evokes decadence and luxury, event down to chic black bottle.
Juniper berries and nutmeg bring sweetness and warmth, which are tempered by the woody notes in the form of Peru balsam.
If you’re thinking this sounds a bit ‘Christmassy,’ fear not –
orris, narcissus and vetiver bring an aromatic, almost powdery quality that ensures the scent steers clear of any festive connotations.
That being said, I do think this is a scent that will shine in the colder months, cutting through cold nights with its resinous heat.
This also makes for a sensual, seductive undertone – one that would work well for date nights, which is when I’ll be reaching for it.

Miller Harris Mìneir
Product Specs
- Scent notesTop Notes: Green Grass, Crispy Sage, Eucalyptus, Cardamom Guatemala, Mint Heart Notes: Sea Salt, Cold Air, Dark Cashmere Wood, Cedarwood, White Flowers, Base Notes: Moss, Myrrh, Papyrus Patchouli, Dry Woods
- Size100ml
What we love
-
Breath of fresh airIt’s tricky to articulate how a scent can evoke cold, fresh air, but the blend of mint, sea salt, pine and eucalyptus do exactly that, making for an invigorating combination
-
Perfect for the officeThis is my go-to scent for work and is housed on my desk for spritzes throughout the day – the crisp, clean notes feel classically professional
-
Sustainable scentsMiller Harris is a boutique British brand committed to sustainability which uses high levels of natural, raw materials and doesn’t formulate with phthalates, artificial colorants, parabens and formaldehydes
Review
Unisex fragrance is booming in 2026, with more and more buyers wanting access to a full range of scent profiles that aren’t restricted to exclusively masculine or feminine blends.
Miller Harris – a boutique, London-based brand – groups its fragrances by scent family rather than gender to great success.
I’m a huge fan of Mìneir, an aromatic-marine fragrance meant to evoke cold, dark water.
It’s fresh and aquatic, with herbal sage offset brightened up by eucalyptus, mint and patchouli.
Meanwhile moss and myrrh add a depth reminiscent of the forest floor, with just a whisper of white flowers.
For me, this is the perfect scent for the office – clean, professional and not too overpowering.
After all, no-one wants to be flooding a meeting room with a leathery or musky scent in my humble opinion.
If you’re a literary buff, you may be intrigued to know this scent was inspired by To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf, which explores themes of nature, solitude and quiet contemplation.

Davidoff Cool Elixir Oud Aromatique Intense
Product Specs
- Scent notesTop: Rose Oxide, Heart: Lavandin, Base: Oud Accord
- Size50ml
Review
The original Davidoff Cool Water might just be most iconic aquatic men’s fragrances on the market, but this rebooted version is a far cry from the light, fresh original, and is all the better for it in my opinion.
With a botanical blend of oud accord base notes, lavandin absolute middle notes and rose oxide top notes, the result is opulent and aromatic.
It’s resinous and herbal, almost like elevated tree sap, slightly sweeter than a traditional woody scent.
I think this would be great for a date and is perhaps better suited to evening wear rather than daytime.
If Cool Water gives surfer boy, this iteration gives the sophisticated gentleman he grows up into.
I was impressed by the lasting power too, finding minimal need to reapply even hours after application.
I’ll be reaching for this when I’m heading to a cocktail party, fancy restaurant or a dancefloor.

Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb Metallic Musk
Product Specs
- Scent notesTop Notes: Bergamot, Black Pepper, Elemi, Aldehydes, Heart Notes: Cinnamon, Piment, Lavandin, Base Notes: Absolu d’Ambrette, Absolu Ciste, Leather Accord, Musk
- Size50ml
What we love
-
Spice up your lifeThe sharp sting of black pepper elemi gives this scent serious punch – expect to grab attention from the first spritz
-
Warm-heartedI loved how cinnamon and lavandin bring aromatic warmth to the scent’s heart notes, slightly softening its edges
-
Sex factorAlluring susk, leather and amber give this fragrance undeniable sex appeal, perfect for that in an, ahem, ‘romantic’ mood
Review
If you like your scents spicy and peppery, this rebooted version of Viktor & Rolf’s iconic Spicebomb is a match made in heaven.
The first impression is potent – with black pepper and elemi adding a sharp sting to fresh bergamot and aldehydes.
However, it’s once this initial burst passes that the real magic happens, as warming cinnamon and aromatic lavandin emerge.
Next comes leather, musk, ambrette – a powerful, masculine base that’s inescapably sensual.
I’ll come out and say it – this scent is sexy. The brand describes its duality as ‘the warmth of bare skin reflected in cold steel’ and it’s this sense of duality that makes it so alluring.
To my mind, this is for candlelit drinks, nightclubs and sensual rendezvous. A couple of spritzes on your pulse points will have you feeling seductive in no time.
I won’t be wearing this on the daily, but the grenade will emerge whenever I need to capture that special someone’s attention.

Montblanc Explorer Extreme
Product Specs
- Scent notesTop note: Bergamot, Heart note: Patchouli, Base note: Warm amber accord
- Size60ml
What we love
-
Great value£69 for a scent with so much projection and lasting power is impressive bang for your buck
-
DimensionalThe brightness of bergamot eventually settles down to leather and amber, an evolution that will definitely capture attention
-
Alpha energyIf you like your scents traditionally masculine this woody, peppery scent profile certainly fits the bills
Review
This fragrance is inspired by adventure and is perfect is you like a traditionally masculine scent.
After a brief burst of brightness in the form of bergamot, this scent moves away from its zingy top note and settles into heavier, more grounded patchouli and vetiver.
This in turn gives way to warm leather and amber accords, a strong, heavy base – one that is perfectly embodied by the black, textured bottle.
Compared to the original Explorer this is darker and warmer thanks to resinous woods. It also has better projection and lasting power, meaning less of a need to reapply.
You can get away with this as a day or night scent, although I’d say it leans slightly towards the latter.
At £69 this is also great value for money and a brilliant place to start for a man just getting into fragrance for the first time.

Electimuss Imperium Pure Parfum
Product Specs
- Scent notesTop notes: Bergamot, Coriander, Heart Notes: Blackcurrant, Orris, Osmanthus, Base Notes: Amber, Musk, Madagascan Vanilla, Guaiac Wood, Oud, Patchouli
- Size100ml
What we love
-
Unisex appealThis distinct, decadent scent works just as well on a man or a woman, making it perfect for sharing – although I guarantee you won’t want to
-
Rooted floralThe floral bouquet of neroli, tuberose, rose, jasmine and lily is masterfully balanced by amber, guaiac wood and smoky vanilla for a blend that never feels saccharine or sickly sweet
-
Projection and punchI was seriously impressed with the lasting power – a solid six hours of projection without a need to reapply
Review
If you’re a gentleman with a penchant for floral scents (there’s no shame in it!) then this unisex fragrance is a delightfully decadent option.
Bergamot and coriander are the first notes to hit you upon spritzing, clean and zingy from the offset.
However, soon afterwards a bouquet of neroli, tuberose, rose, jasmine and lily settling starts to bloom – a heady floral cocktail that doesn’t feel sickly sweet or powdery in the slightest.
This is likely thanks to the base of amber and smoky vanilla, which provides warmth and woodiness, while patchouli and oud add herby, earthy dimension.
This fragrance feels perfect for Spring and Summer and works just as well by day and it does by night.
It feels utterly VIP and the brand champions it as a fragrance for success, elegance and style. Don’t mind if I do!
In case you’re wondering where the name comes from, Imperium refers to the supreme power held by the intellectual and political giants of the ancient world, and this fragrance is designed to evoke this very sense of commanding charisma.
Yes £200 is expensive, but if you want smell just as expensive, you won’t regret making this your new signature scent.

Escentric Molecules M+ Champaca
Product Specs
- Scent notesIso E Super, Champaca
- Size100ml
What we love
-
Quiet eleganceDescribed as ‘opulent and weightless,’ this scent is refined, supremely wearable and never overpowering
-
Jack of all tradesWith notes across the floral, woody, amber and musk scent families, there’s a delightful balance to this fragrance
-
A scent for allThis unisex scent would also wear wonderfully on a woman, a credit to its impeccable versatility
Review
This velvety, creamy scent is like if you could bottle Bridgerton – it’s refined, floral and undercut with the earthiness of tea, reminding me of a fancy drawing room.
The brand’s scent enhancer, Iso E Super, which brings with it a warm woodiness, while champaca absolute adds rich, exotic layers of jasmine and orange blossom.
In the best possible way, this scent is a Jack of all trades, balancing notes from across the amber, woody, floral and musky scent families.
The brand describes the formulations as ‘opulent yet weightless’ and I would agree. There’s a quiet elegance here which makes it supremely wearable, never ‘too much’ or overpowering.
This turned out to be one of the most popular fragrances I tested, particularly among women.
I’ll be wearing this to galleries, museums, book shops and afternoon teas – anywhere with a hint of pomp, in fact.

Czech & Speake Ausonia Eau De Parfum
Product Specs
- Scent notesConifer, Apple, Vanilla
- Size100ml
What we love
-
Summer in a bottleJust one spritz of this takes your mind to sand, sea and salt – truly perfect for the warmer months
-
Citrus sensationZingy apple and lemon are tempered by pine, conifer, musk and vanilla, adding forest-like depth to each spritz
-
Daytime delightThis particularly shines during the day – think boat trips, brunches or days at the beach
Review
This unisex fragrance is perfect for Spring and Summer days in the sun and will be travelling with me on every holiday for the foreseeable future.
Designed to evoke both the Atlantic breeze over the vineyards of Southern France and smell of distant pine forests, this scent opens with zingy lemon, apple and basil, before the woodiness of conifer and camphor wood starts to settle.
I loved how the base notes of vanilla and musk emerged from the initial citrus spitz, adding warmth to avoid the dreaded ‘surface cleaner’ connotations that can sometimes come with a lemon or apple-heavy scent.
It took the brand two years to capture this aquatic, oceanic ozone scent and I can confirm it perfectly summons memories of sunshine, the beach and the sea breeze.
If you want to tap into your inner surfer boy or Riviera slicker, you’ll want this in your travel bag.
Our verdict
Of course, personal preference will always win out when it comes to fragrance, but if we had to narrow it done, there a are a few notable mentions.
Prada Paradigme is the most palatable and best all-rounder if you want a pick that has mass appeal and is unlikely to rub anyone up the wrong way, making it great for gifting.
Meanwhile for wow factor, the Bvlgari Le Gemme Tygar Extrair Parfum is in a league of its own and is true luxury bottled. Expect to turn heads.
Finally for value, Davidoff Cool Elixir Oud Aromatique Intense has the best payoff at a price point of just £62 – the most affordable on the list while still delivering a stunning scent profile.
Prada, Givenchy and Ralph Lauren’s rebooted fragrances make for great gifts thanks to their broad appeal and impressive lasting power
It’s advisable to apply scents to the pulse points of the body: the wrists, neck and behind the ears. This is because these areas generate heat, which helps diffuse the scent.
The aftershaves and fragrances to avoid
While there’s no one perfume men should avoid, there are certain scents that you might want to think twice about. Anything too overly sweet and feminine can be a turn off, as can anything too manly. It’s important to find a balance.
You should also avoid wearing too much perfume, while it’s nice to smell nice, many masculine scents are already quite punchy and wearing too much perfume can be a turn off. Stick to a couple of spritzes.
Many fragrance experts online have also said that body spray used as perfume and cheap scents are to be avoided. When it comes to perfume, often spending out more will get you a better product.
FAQs
Where should I apply my fragrance?
It’s advisable to apply scents to the pulse points of the body: the wrists, neck and behind the ears. This is because these areas generate heat, which helps diffuse the scent.
However, it’s best not to rub your wrists together immediately after application, as doing so disrupts the molecular structure of the perfume and can destabilise the blend’s top notes.
Other tips include moisturising your skin before applying fragrance, which helps it last longer, and remembering to also apply it directly to clothes, provided you’re not dealing with a delicate fabric which may be marked.
What’s the difference between aftershave, eau de toilette and eau de parfum?
Aftershave or cologne represents the lowest strength of fragrance at 2% to 5%, providing a faint hint of a scent.
Eau de toilette sits higher at 5% to 15%, giving a light aroma ideal for everyday use.
Eau de parfum rests at between 15% and 20%, offering a more potent hit that should last between four and six hours.
Meanwhile pure parfum or extrait represents 20% to 40% of fragrance, the highest on the market, with lasting power beyond six hours.
If you link punchy, clasically masculine scents, Viktor & Rolf, Davidoff and Montblanc are your best bet thanks to their woody, spicy base notes
Unisex fragrances are booming and some of our top picks would also work well on a woman, making them perfect for sharing, although we guarantee you won’t want to…
Where’s the best place to store my fragrance?
Fragrance is best stored in a cool, dark place as direct sunlight and humidity can degrade it over time.
There’s no need to pop your favourites in the fridge, but inside a cupboard is ideal where it’s safe from the rays.
How do I find my signature scent?
Finding a scent you really feel suits you can be tricky, but there are a few steps you can take to help you along the way.
Looking at your past favourites it a place great to start, and if there are multiple picks you may want to compare them to find where the common ground lies – it may be there’s a particular note you keep being drawn back to, but in different formulations. For example, fans of spicy scents might like Viktor and Rolf’s Spicebomb, whole those looking for a more ‘manly’ leather scent might prefer Montblanc’s Explorer Extreme.
If testing scents in person you should avoid trying out more than three or four in one go, as you risk sensory overload or even ‘nose blindness’ – instead, give yourself breaks so your nose has a chance to reset.
You’re also better off testing scents on your skin rather than paper testers, as this gives a better impression of how it’ll react to your skin chemistry and evolve through its top, heart and base notes over time.
