Son ‘killed his mum with axe’ then ‘wrapped her physique in tent and buried it in woods’
Police say a man has confessed to killing his own mother with an axe and burying her in a nearby forest, after a body was discovered by sniffer dogs after his behaviour ‘raised suspicions’
A man has been arrested on suspicion of killing his own mum with an axe after police dogs discovered a body buried in the woods.
Latvian police arrived his property last Saturday (April 11) as part of a search for a missing woman, who is believed to be his mother. They reported him as displaying unusual behaviour which “raised suspicions“.
A police statement read: “Police, while checking information about a missing woman born in 1973, arrived at her place of residence in Daugavpils. Upon arrival at the specified address, the woman was not found. At the same time, the attention of the officers was attracted by the behaviour of the woman’s son, which raised suspicions”.
Police said they discovered traces of blood in various locations around the house, as well as on an axe and a wheelbarrow. Officers also found burned women’s clothes.
When questioned about the whereabouts of his mother, cops said he “repeatedly changed his testimony about his mother’s whereabouts”. He was detained and a search of the property and the surrounding area was conducted using sniffer dogs.
Police reportedly found the body of a woman buried in a forest, with the torso wrapped in a tent. The woman’s head and back of the neck were covered in cuts and bruises.
Police said: “It should be noted that dog handlers from the State Police were also involved in the search for the dead woman’s body.” The man, who was reportedly born in 1996, allegedly confessed to the crime, according to police.
The force said “Continuing the investigation, after focused and professional work with the alleged perpetrator, the man confessed that on April 7 of this year, he hit his mother several times with an axe, after which he buried the woman’s body in a nearby forest.” Law enforcement officers are continuing their investigation and are trying to determine the motive for the crime.
The suspect, who has not yet been named in line with standard Latvian police procedure, has been kept in custody, according to local reports. Under Latvian law, murder is punishable by life in prison.
