Russell & Bromley closes 10 shops throughout UK as discount hunters race to 90% off sale

Next snapped up iconic British footwear brand Russell & Bromley in a pre-pack administration deal back in January, with 10 store closures now being rolled out across the UK

A leading British footwear retailer has closed 10 of its outlets following an administration agreement. Russell & Bromley, which formerly ran 36 shops nationwide before being bought by Next, has begun its initial round of shutdowns.

The company is shutting its Covent Garden branch today (April 22) alongside its Bath and Harrogate locations tomorrow, according to Drapers. Russell & Bromley is also rolling out clearance sales offering 90% off everything.

This follows Next’s acquisition of the British shoe brand through a pre-pack administration arrangement in January this year, which saw the fashion giant secure the Russell & Bromley name, additional intellectual property, and three particular outlets (Chelsea, Mayfair, and Bluewater). Next managed to relocate 40 staff members to its business during the transaction.

Russell & Bromley formerly traded from 36 outlets with approximately 440 workers, but now confronts scheduled closures of 33 independent stores and nine concessions throughout the UK and Ireland, Drapers reported.

The label was established in 1880 by George Bromley and Elizabeth Russell in Eastbourne and gained recognition for its distinctive loafers, boots, pumps, and brogues, reports the Express.

It attracted numerous celebrities including Kate Middleton, Katie Holmes, and Billie Piper. Russell & Bromley operated from 36 shops and nine concessions across the UK and Ireland, employing roughly 440 individuals.

The Daily Express has approached Russell & Bromley’s joint administrators Interpath for comment.

The news comes after we reported how River Island has confirmed that its outlet at the Friars Walk shopping centre in Newport, Wales, will shut its doors for good on Sunday (April 19).

The store first welcomed customers alongside the shopping centre’s opening in 2015, meaning it has been serving shoppers for just over a decade.

This closure forms part of a broader reshuffle for the brand, which boasts more than 220 outlets across the UK and Ireland. In recent months, the retailer has already closed over 30 stores as part of a restructuring plan aimed at steadying the business.

As the Newport branch gears up for closure, customers have been treated to discounts of up to 50% off in a clearance sale, according to South Wales Argus.
